My first time visiting my dad’s country was one year ago. I got on the plane with my family, only expecting to have a great vacation. I expected to spend time on the beach, take a ton of pictures, buy souvenirs, and anything else that was deemed as ‘cool’ to tell my friends back home. What I ended up with though, was a vacation that resulted in me finding myself. As soon as we landed in Dangriga, I became engulfed with my family’s Garifuna culture. Seeing the traditional Wanaragua dancers, meeting some of family members for the first time, and becoming one with the culture was a life changing experience that I’ll never forget. Leading up to my trip I felt as if I had become almost stuck in life. I felt a sense of confusion and anger with the
On this land in the southwestern region of the United States of America, you will be fascinated by the cultural amalgamation of Native American, Hispanic, and Mexican culture. And here you do not learn cultures in just museums; you get the chance to explore the landscape and meet people and make the experience truly YOURS. And it doesn’t matter if you don’t speak Spanish.
When the topic comes to presidential assassins, most people will not use the word amusing and assassins in the same sentence; however; Dan Danbom, a reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, proved otherwise and stated that Vowell has succeeded in creating a “humorous” historical context by writing “I can confidently say that Sarah Vowel’s Assassination Vacation is the most amusing book you’ll read this year about presidential assassinations” (Danbom). Sarah Vowel’s purpose of Assassination Vacation is to allow readers to have a look at both sides of history to shed light on the assassins, to reanimate moments lost to history, and to make her book more interesting by using her unique style of writing; although she fails miserably by adding in too much humor and too many personal opinions, she was successful by examining the motive of the assassins, giving analysis to allow readers to look at past and present events, and by using her interesting style of writing to engage readers to continue reading the story.
As my family and I walked into the plane, we were excited. The plane ride to jamaica stopped in L.A. and, after that, it went to jamaica. When we arrived in Jamaica it was really hot, but it was wet. I immediately took off my sweater I was wearing on the plane. We took a bus to our hotel. Then we started swimming in the water park. Every night there was a show in the main stage. The next day we woke up early to go to chukka. It was awesome. We saw a great house, rode on horses, and did a challenge course. After we came back from Chukka, we went to the water park and swimming pool at the hotel. Then we ate at fresh, which we went most of the time. The next day we woke up earlier to go to the dolphin cove. The bus was an hour late, but the wait
Guatemala’s staple food is the beloved tamales plus the have a wide variety of exotic fruits and vegetables. Born in Costa Rica, and having been obliged get accustomed to three different countries and cultures before the age of 18, my father is very diverse. He experienced Hispanic customs in San Jose, became familiar with the Haitian nation in Port-au-Prince, and discovered the American way of life in Kansas. For that reason, today, he is always eager to discover
The work to get to this country will be worth all the effort. I will learn and live how I’ve never lived before. I will experience what many have not. I will be able to share my knowledge of The Trobriander culture with my own culture and others around the world. The experience will teach me how I may research another culture. Maybe I will learn by trial and error the best ways to study a new culture. The experience to research a culture completely new will change my thoughts on culture. My anthropological research will present me with a whole new view and meaning of
Vacation time is the best time. More than likely during that time I can be found laid out on the beach or frolicking in the waves. The one place I would choose for a perfect vacation destination rests in the country of French Polynesia. That beloved destination is the small island of Bora Bora. It is absolutely stunning.
There is indeed wisdom that can be taught through the vandalized walls of a stained Costa Rican bathroom stall: that people lack the patience to wash their hands in all countries, and that ‘Wet Floor’ caution signs are not to be taken advantage of, but a blessing one should think to be grateful for. Another wise piece of judgment that I picked up at that graffiti stained, germ-infested public lavatory is “Pura Vida”, or Pure Life. A phrase that stretched across the stalls that stuck in my fourteen-year old wandering mind, and that guided, and will continue to guide, the way I live my life. To illustrate, I have spent the summer before the 9th grade at Arenal, Costa Rica, On the last three days of our 10-day trek, for some reason that only God knows why, my dear mother and father decided to sign our family up for a 3 hour, 11,000 feet Selvatura Rainforest Canopy Tour. 15 cables. 18 platforms.
In Chiang Khong, Thailand, I took a boat down the Mekong River, which took me to Laos. Beautiful scenery on either side of the river, calm and relaxing waters lulled me to sleep, no matter how much I tried to stay awake, I ended up taking almost 20 naps as we floated into Laos. The journey was in a way a prelude to the country that awaited me, full of tranquility and absent of all the stress of a daily humdrum life. On the undulating river, meandering through majestic mountains and deep gorges was a journey that has left an indelible imprint on my mind.
A constant yearning for experiencing new ways of thinking in the form of other cultures has been growing inside of me ever since. I have attempted to quench this thirst over the years by traveling to four different continents and connecting with several different cultures. Implementing the habit of veering off the beaten path has been a wonderful way of immersing myself in the local lifestyle. Every new experience has broadened my view of the world and has given me valuable insights that I have tried to apply throughout my

My favorite summer vacation was when my Father took me to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. What made it even more memorable was the fact that it was my very first time on an airplane. I cannot recall another time in my life when I experienced so much joy. That trip to Universal Studios was the first time my Father and I actually did something together, just the two of us and was something brought me close to my Father. In this essay I will tell you about my plane ride over there, what I did right when I got there, and about my time at Universal Studios.
My most memorable family vacation took place two years ago. We went to Corsica, a French island situated in the south of France right next to Italy. I remembered waking up early excited to visit this new land. Used to take long flights, I was surprised to arrive to the destination after a one-hour flight. Even though the flight was short for me, it was stressful for my mom, she has never felt secured in a plane, probably due to the fact that she is afraid of height. When finally arrived at the destination, the dry and warm weather was there to welcome us. We all felt relief, and knew that this was the beginning of the summer. Excited, we had a lot of activities planned for the few weeks, me and my father could not wait to dive in the clear
The first summer vacation after college entrance examination was amazing since I went to my dream place Hainan with the guy who I like very much, I also travelled to a very prosperous place-Hong Kong with my dear parents and most proud of was that I learned how to dive and cook.
In reading the book “Go and come back” I was taken to a place that was described the way I remember camping in the jungles of Belize. From constantly swatting bugs away from myself to bathing in a creek, the village described in the book seemed very minimalist with only a place to sleep and a place to cook for each family. The people of the village lived off the land and each person played a role, when the men would go deep into the woods and hunt if they brought back an animal he would share it with the whole village, and that was expected. When two American anthropologists, Joanna and Margarita decided to stay in this particular village the dynamic changed.
