My first time visiting my dad’s country was one year ago. I got on the plane with my family, only expecting to have a great vacation. I expected to spend time on the beach, take a ton of pictures, buy souvenirs, and anything else that was deemed as ‘cool’ to tell my friends back home. What I ended up with though, was a vacation that resulted in me finding myself. As soon as we landed in Dangriga, I became engulfed with my family’s Garifuna culture. Seeing the traditional Wanaragua dancers, meeting some of family members for the first time, and becoming one with the culture was a life changing experience that I’ll never forget.
