Inside the Outsides Having problems and overcoming them makes people stronger, right? Well the Curtis brothers and the gang definitely went through many difficulties, but in the end they made it with the help of each other. S.E. Hinton, the author of the book, started to write this while she was in high school at the age of fifteen. In her high school there were two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers. She ended up writing her story based on the conflicts and events of the gang's lives and named it The Outsiders. Some of the main characters that went through these conflicts were Ponyboy, Johnny, Soda, Darry, and the rest of the gang. All of them turned to the gang for support and help. The Greasers were not scared to show emotions and that is what drew the line between Greasers and Socs. In the book Most of the Greasers did not come from good homes so they had to stick with each other for the love and support they needed. In the novel The Outsiders the narrator introduces all of the characters in the beginning and at this point they are talking about Johnny. “I think he hated that worse than getting whipped. He would have run away a millions times if we hadn’t been there.” (Hinton 12) It is easily seen that Johnny and everyone else in the gang turns to each other for help and support. Without each other they would not be who or where they are now. Johnny’s parents neglect and abuse him. Johnny never learned from his parents how to love because his parents never showed that to him so thanks to the gang, he learned. Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry also have family problems because after their parents died, there is a chance Pony and Soda will be put in a boys home. The higher authorities could split them from each other, but they need to stick together because it is all that they have.
