Responding to Gangs in the School Setting

In 2010 Forty-five percent of high school students interviewed said that there are gangs or students that think they are part of a gang in their school. Thirty-five percent of middle-school students believe they have gangs in school or that students think they are part of a gang in their schools (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Fearbry Jones, 2010).
There is a huge difference in the percentages of schools with gangs reported by students, when you're comparing public and private schools, 46 percent of students in public schools is the, only 2 percent in private school (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Fearbry Jones, 2010).
According to the School Crime Supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey (2007), “twenty-three 23 percent of students reported the presence of gangs on their school campus or in the surrounding area in 2007”. This indicates that there was an increase of twenty-one percent from 2003. Schools in urban areas seem to be affected the most by gangs, with thirty-six percent in 2005 vs, twenty-one in suburban area schools (Arciaga, Sakamoto, & Fearbry Jones, 2010). …show more content…
