Comparison between Gangs and Youth Violence April Smolkowicz Senior Seminar 4940 Georgia Gwinnett College Over the past decade or so, suggested research of gang membership status enhances serious and violent behavior of delinquency involvement. However, there are differences and similarities in identifying the cumulative risk factors and risk factors in multiple domains, to what extent are the patterns similar or different and what are the odds of violent offending among gang members? What will the results reveal? An analysis of each of the cumulative risk factors such as: sex, race, age, family structure, and highest parental education, predicted that gang members and serious violent offenders possess the highest levels of risk factors within each of the domains. The odds of involvement increases drastically when possessing risk factors in multiple domains as opposed to possessing none or just having one in a single domain. Six risk factors associated with gang membership are the same as those for violent offending in a multivariate analysis controlling for demographics and the effects of all 18 risk factors; reported significantly related to both violence and gang affiliation. In the final analysis what does all this mean for violence prevention? With result addressing that similar approaches should work for both violence and gang prevention.
