I assisted nursing staff and medical providers with various procedures including splinting, wound repair, central line placement, intubations, and chest tube placement. I also aided in the stablization and care of critical patients. Additionally I transported patients from the ER to the main hospital when they were admitted. During this time I learned how to use the computational chemistry programs Spartan and AutoDock Vina in order to perform a similarity analysis on anti-epileptic drugs. The goal of this project was to determine which drug has the best fit based on the calculated binding affinity to the active site on the GABA-A receptor in the human brain. During the second year I was elected to the position of secretary where I was responsible for recording and distributing the meeting minutes as well as other administrative tasks. Since there were minimal resources for pre-health students at the University of Redlands, one other student and I created the Pre-Health Club. The first year I served as Vice President and then assumed the role of President the following year. I planned weekly meetings in which we would discuss various career paths in the health industry, community service opportunities and various health related topics. I also organized various guest speakers during club meetings and field trips to nearby schools for health sciences. I participated in biweekly meetins where we discussed topics in chemistry and community service, career and research oppurtunities. We also performed and observed various experiences such as placing gummy bears in potassium chlorate or making beer. During this time I was able to from a close relationship with my chemistry professors and peers.
