The Fast and Furious franchise produces films that often receive a lot of critique; some might call it a spectacle for the eyes, but not the brain. Others may deem it a bad movie because it lacks a sophisticated plot or superb acting, but this is what makes the newest installment of the franchise, Furious 7, so good. It doesn’t pander with complicated, airtight storylines or bog the viewer down with redundant vocabulary and complex symbolism. Furious 7 realizes and accepts that it is that summer blockbuster action extravaganza, and that’s exactly what it strives to be. The main commonality the makes an action movie an action movie is that it is mostly based around that actions of the characters/events that take place rather than the dialogue. However, the events have to be presented in a way that would engage the viewers and get their heart pumping without context, such as the films plot or the characters backstories. For example, seeing Vin Diesel drive a car out of a skyscraper and landing onto another one is going to be exciting to a viewer regardless of what happened before. But if you take the scene from Silence of the Lambs where Clarice is walking around Buffalo Bill’s house and show it to an audience without knowledge of what the plot of the movie is, it probably won’t trigger the same level of excitement from the audience. This is also what makes action films so popular internationally because the events of the movie are exciting to the viewer’s regardless of their spoken language. There are a large amount of jump cuts with the time in between shots being very short on average, rapidly cutting from shot to shot to immerse the viewer in the spectacle that is the race war. In terms of transition from shot to shot we also see a number of fast wipes (left and right) paired with diegetic sound from cars in the scene. This creates an exciting cut and gives the audience the feeling that a car just rushed by them and leads them into the next shot. Continuity editing is used in this montage style sequence, working in conjunction with both diegetic and non-diegetic sound to create a smooth feeling sequence. In addition to the shot length, there are a few editing effects used in this scene to establish Furious 7 as purely an action film. One of these editing techniques would be the slowing down or speeding up of time in each shot. By slowing down the shot, the viewer is forced to look at it for an extended period of time when normally it would have cut to another after only a few seconds. This is a common technique in this scene used primarily for the shots of the women at the race war. By slowing down time in the shots it helps sell that sexy and cool feeling for the scene.
