Who is Fred Hollows?
Frederick Cossom or “Fred” Hollows was an eye doctor, who sought to be of assistance to others. He spent his life aiding those who weren’t capable of affording, or accessing, basic eye care. He was someone who strived to end avoidable blindness and improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal Australians who were suffering from some of the worse eye diseases that he had ever seen. Due his great desire to lend a hand to others, he did just that. He raised money to build lens factories in Eritrea and Nepal, to reduce the cost of cataract operations from hundreds of dollars to just $25. He was also entitled “Australian of the Year” in 1990 for the lengths he would go to simply just to help another.
What is their message/teaching?
“I believe that the basic attribute of mankind is to look after each other.”
Personally, I feel that this message is one that holds great significance. The reason as to why I feel this way is since this particular message is someone related to all of humankind. When gazing upon society nowadays, conflict, and agony is something, you can immediately describe the world that us Homo sapiens all live in. It’s a world where one action, one word, can start a fire that will continue to burn until it removes everything from sight. Simply looking after someone, can become that someone’s strength to move on and will be what keeps them from bringing hatred and conflict. In order to rid what he considered wrong – poor communities unable to obtain basic eye care- he decided to generate the foundation known as the “Fred Hollows Foundation.” The Fred Hollows Foundation is a non-profit aid organization based in Australia, whose intention is to fight for change, look after the wellbeing of the Indigenous, empower communities, treat, and prevent blindness and other vision issues.
