Alfonso Cuarón’s movie “The Children of Men” depicts a catastrophic future for humanity. Although it is portrayed to show events in the future approximately the year 2027 what is interesting is that the society in which the people live in is very similar to the world we live in today. The buildings, stores, cars (although weird-looking) do not look at all fancy as one might think the future to look. Cuarón’s look on the future is not a positive, hopeful one as his movie foreshadows sorrows, miseries and gloom waiting to be welcomed into our world. His movie though does indeed go parallel with the political and societal events of today. The story revolves around a world that is infertile and that there are no more babies being born for the past eighteen years. It is like he is predicting what is happening in the coming years as more and more women prioritize pursuing their careers over having babies. Also with the many diseases and wars happening in the world many lives are being lost, but women are also choosing to have abortion and putting their babies for adoption. The women in the movie are infertile meanwhile the men are fertile; foreshadowing that maybe because women are not having babies as they should this could be an environmental punishment or simply a punishment from God. In “The Children of Men” people if 2027 have lost all hope because there are not new generations coming to earth to start a new life and continue the past they have left. We live our lives today, producing children, inventing new technologies and strategies to make life easier and more enjoyable for those who are still arriving. More lives have been lost in the 21st century then in any century before; therefore foreshadowing that in the years to come we probably should not be so hopeful for real peace. Maybe those heart broken mothers an fathers should not expect to see their children’s deaths as useful. Maybe those orphaned babies should not be given false hope that one day they will be able to go to school without hearing gun shots as if birds were chirping. Cuarón did an amazing job by foreshadowing the coming days. Even though his movie was on the negative side I still feel that he is a little hopeful. Theo and Kee are on a journey to find the Human Projects ship called the Tomorrow and at the end they find it with its big bold letters. Even as the world gets uglier and uglier there are still those who look for tomorrow and have a small seed of hope inside their minds and hearts.
	The novel illuminates light on the situation not just during the Vietnam era, but also rather throughout all history and the future to come. Throughout mankind’s occupation of earth, we have been plagued by war and the sufferings caused by it. Nearly every generation of people to walk this earth have experienced a great war once in their lifetimes. For instance, Vietnam for my father’s generation, World War 2 for my grandfather’s, and World War 1 for my great-grandfather’s. War has become an unavoidable factor of life. Looking through history and toward the future, I grow concerned over the war that will plague my generation, for it might be the last war.

His foil character Sam MacMurfee persistently searches for way to ruin the career of Willie Starks. Sam MacMurfee has thugs and powerful political allies deep in his pockets. The two characters remind the reader of corrupt figures in politics such as the famous Boss Tweed.

The government is the film based majority of their focus on immigration and sending people back to where they were from and taking out any terrorist that may eventually harm the well-being of people in the UK, the reason this is so relevant is because while everyone focus was immigration there was so much going on that could’ve prevented all of that from happening but because of the ignorance it just left the world even more separated than before. The future holds a different meaning for everyone, for some it holds hope while for others it holds despair. This constant wondering about the future has influenced many works to be written about the future. Some of these works propose a blissful future, but the majority paint the picture of an unfortunate dystopian world. Recently I read Daughters of the North, a novel in which the dystopian future of England is shown. Shortly after reading Daughters of the North, I watched The Road. This film showed a similar view of the future, yet more grim and unappealing that Daughters of the North. In this essay I will be comparing and contrasting these two works to show two different points of view of what a dystopian world is. After watching The Road I realised there was a large amount of books and movies that believe the future will be grim. I believe this is because as humans we fear what may be in our future due to the conflicts that we face today and wish to warm the world.
