Throughout the novel, Freak The Mighty, author Rodman Philbrick create a conflict for the two main characters, Max and Freak. If Maxwell had judged Freak by his appearance, they wouldn’t, most likely, become best friends. Perhaps if Max did not judge Loretta Lee, the supposed antagonist, by her disheveled appearance, Max might have realized that Loretta wasn’t a “bad guy”. Finally, if The Fair Gwen had not judged Max, Freak and Max would not have become friends. In an attempt to escape Killer Kane, the characters learn that one should not judge a person by their appearance. If Maxwell had judged Freak by his appearance, the two wouldn’t most likely, not be best friends. On page 7, the narrator, Max, states, “... because the next thing I notice is this crippled-up yellow-haired midget kid strutting around…” (Philbrick 7). Throughout the novel, Loretta is perceived as the antagonist however Max learns later on that Loretta is actually one of the protagonists. On page 65 Max states, “... this scrawny, yellow haired woman with small, hard eyes and blurry lips. She’s smoking this cigarette and squinting at us and making a face” (Philbrick 65). This shows that Max was judging Loretta by her appearance and not what she feels emotionally. If Loretta had not called Freak and Max names, then perhaps Max and Freak would have seen a different side of Loretta. On page 126 Loretta states, “‘The plan is Iggy keeps him busy while I get you loose, now isn’t that a good plan? There’s enough cops up there to start a war, we’ll be safe enough we get out of this godforsaken place”’ (Philbrick 126). This shows that Loretta is trying to help Max escape from KIller Kane.
