Franklin Delano Roosevelt choose to run for a fourth term for President of the United States since the country was in the middle of a world war. Rumors surrounded the nation that the President would suspend the election due to the war; however, Roosevelt did not have that happen since elections are constitutional law (Boller). Nobody protested a fourth term because of the war. Rosevelt felt he could not leave the country while the world was in turmoil. He did not run for office because of the great power of the presidency; he ran since he felt he had an obligation to the American people and the world. Roosevelt stated, "I would, quite honestly, have retired to Hyde Park with infinite pleasure in 1941” if it was not for the crisis abroad (Dallek).
In the Roaring Twenties, people started buying household materials and stocks that they could not pay for in credit. Farmers, textile workers, and miners all got low wages. In 1929, the stock market crashed. All of these events started the Great Depression. During the beginning of the Great Depression, 9000 banks were closed, ending nine million savings accounts. This lead to the closing of eighty-six thousand businesses, a European depression, an overproduction of food, and a lowering of prices. It also led to more people going hungry, more homeless people, and much lower job wages. There was a 28% increase in the amount of homeless people from 1929 to 1933. And in the midst of the beginning of the Great Depression, President Hoover did nothing to improve the condition of the nation. In 1932, people decided that America needed a change. I was born January 30th, 1882 in Hyde Park, NY. In my childhood I grew up on a farm near the Hudson River. My fifth cousin was Teddy Roosevelt. My journey to politics began when I became the New York state senator in 1911. I also became the governor of New York in 1929 before running for president. That same year the stock market would crash and the Great Depression would begin.
