The Holocaust was the persecution and murder of Jewish people in Germany and area controlled by the Nazis from January 30, 1933 till May 8, 1945. During the Holocaust ten million people were killed and approximately six million of them were Jewish people. The Nazi party and Germans were the ones in power during the Holocaust. They got the power by being a strong army led by Adolf Hitler who was liked in Germany for promising to bring power and pride back to Germany. Adolf Hitler used the power in a bad way by having Germans dislike Jewish people and having them killed. The members of the Nazi organization were the ones responsible for the Holocaust because they were the ones who organized the killings of the Jewish people. There were many laws against the Jewish people. Jewish people who were found guilty of crimes were to be sent to extermination camps. The crimes that were committed were usually small things like not saying they were Jewish or having the star of david visible on them or going against the Nazi party. Germans were very strict against the Jewish people and would arrest them over small things which led to their death at extermination camps. This proves that Germans were responsible for the Holocaust because they were trying to get rid of many Jewish people and would use any excuse they could. Document C is an account of Holocaust Mass Shooting in Ukraine by a German who testified about the Holocaust which says that he saw many Jewish prisoners from extermination camps in ditches being executed by SS soldiers. They would have the Jewish people take off their clothes and have them bunch together in a group to be shot and be buried where they were killed. In document #4 which was written by Walter Meyer who was a German teen who helped Jewish people formed a gang who played tricks on young Nazi’s and helped French prisoners of war. They would also hide Jewish people in basements. The gang called themselves “White Noble Pirates.” This shows that German citizens were trying to help out Jewish and French prisoners while being against the Nazis. Since they played tricks on the Nazi’s that also meant they would distract or confuse them to help out people trying to escape them. They gave Jewish People a chance to hide and not get caught by the Nazis. Another document is #7 which was written by Yad Vashem, an organization that honors those killed in the Holocaust. It shows the consequences of German citizens if they were caught aiding the Jewish. It also shows the ways they helped them like hide them in their homes and house their children. This proves that German citizens were not responsible for the Holocaust because they knew the harsh consequences of helping the Jewish yet they still did it. They would risk their life and also their families by aiding them. The last example is “The White Rose” which was students in the University Minish were standing up for Jewish people by making and passing out pamphlets informing people of the Holocaust and the truth.
