Four Chapters In Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club

In the book the Joy Luck Club, there are four parts that are broken up into 4 sections to create sixteen chapters in all. These four parts tell old Chinese tales to begin the each chapter. The stories in almost every section of the book are intended to teach the audience a lesson that is supposed to go with the mother's and daughter's life. The tales that are told in the story shape and give a clue to what is going to happen to the daughters or mothers in the story. As the audience already knows that there are many tales that are told in the story. These stories are the base for what has to come later in the sections. These stories have lessons and hidden meanings that will show through the mothers and daughters. For example, the first part of the book is “Feathers from a Thousand Li Away” is intended to teach the reader about hope, which is symbolized by the swan. One of the mothers in the story has a feather from the swan and in hopes, one day give it to her daughter and tell her the struggles that the family had to go through to have a better life. These two figures teach something to the characters in the novel. A story about the Moon Lady was told and it said that she had a terrible fate to live alone on the moon, without her husband because she was greedy and selfish. This story of the Mood Lady teaches that a wish can be granted, but not trusted, and this is presented to Ying-Ying. Next, in the chapter called the “Rice Husband” is an old Chinese tale that is told to many children growing up. This tale is about when little children don’t finish all of their rice in their bowl and the rice that is left uneaten will show up on the child's future significant another face, like pimples or moles.
