They can cause significant damage to the natural and built environments, and to the health of the people who are exposed to the chemicals that are released when these fuels are burned. It is these type of problems that have made alternative, renewable sources of energy a more attractive option since they do not produce the same kinds of pollution and problems. Burning fossil fuels can also cause health problems in addition to these serious environmental problems, particularly in countries where sufficient precautions are not being taken. The chemicals, such as heavy metals, that are released into the air through the combustion of fossil fuels can lead to higher rates of cancer and an increased risk of respiratory illnesses in the surrounding area.
