Every good and/or bad thing must come to an end at a certain point and this is where termination comes into play in social work practice. Termination is a vital skill when you are a social worker. Termination is the end of a therapeutic relationship it may be planned or unplanned and may impact the client and/or social worker (Ballan). The reason for my termination between the agency and my clients and myself would be forced termination. It is forced termination due to the school year coming to a close and my internship coming to an end. Forced termination is the “termination of the counseling relationship before the work of therapy has been fully accomplished” (TYPES OF TERMINATION). Forced termination is extremely common especially as a student. …show more content…
As individuals we always encounter challenges within ourselves and our work. One personal challenge for me would be knowing my client isn't where we had hoped they would be at this point in time. It is hard when your time with your client is coming to an end and you have no idea what that client will do afterwards. It lives myself with a lot of questions, Will they see a therapist?, Will they get housing?, Will they be accepted for medicaid? Or will they that into that substance abuse facility they wanted. Also another personal challenge I have is control, not having control over your clients actions. It is not easy when you know you’ve done everything possible and your client still is not ready to change. Although both of these challenges are extremely difficult you can't prevent them. As a social worker the best we could do is meet our clients where they are at and support them no matter what even if it isn't the outcome we wanted or hoped …show more content…
As the months went on I grew to understand the need the library has and the community need where I interned. I always thought back to my first encounter so during the second semester of my internship I was fortunate enough to run a staff training all about social work. During this staff training I was able to educate my co-workers and all library staff on the social work need within our library and the community. Another professional challenge for me was diversity in the sense of working with different populations and people from all over. This was just a challenge for me because I worked as a preschool teacher prior to social work and I have always worked with childrens and families. I primarily focused on IEP (Individualized education plans) and IFSP (Individualized family service plans) for the students and their families. When I started my field placement I worked primarily with adults and individuals of all socioeconomic statuses and
Social workers level the playing field for individuals and families that have experienced hardships, terminal illnesses, mental health disorders and other adverse environmental situations that inhibit their ability to thrive within society. Social workers accomplish this by providing individuals and families the resources necessary to ensure that their needs are being met. Social workers serve an essential role to the functioning of our society, as they are committed and dedicated to increasing the quality of life for underprivileged community members. I fully intend on actively contributing to this endeavor, as I believe social workers have the responsibility to ensure that all community members have their needs met and the opportunity to
I would have terminated early when signs of high stress levels on the participants were visible. Such as them forgetting the concept that they can leave at the time and showing signs that they felt institutionalized. A follow up study should have occurred to understand the mind set of all the individuals involved.
Was termination excessive? [36] All of the authorities submitted used the following non-exhaustive list of factors In William Scott to determine if discipline was excessive: a. The seriousness of the offence b. If the offense was premeditated, repetitive or an isolated incident c. The length of service and if it was relatively free disciplinary d. The use of corrective discipline e. Inconsistent or harsh application of policies [37] For example, applying the same factors, in Ontario after determining that the Grievor disobeyed a direct order from his supervisor, the two-day suspension was found to be too severe and substituted with a warning letter.
All psychotherapeutic work has to end because it is the most fundamental goal of therapy to make itself obsolete. Ideally, a patient and his or her therapist realize at the same time that the treatment goals are achieved to a sufficient degree and are ready to terminate; however, this does not always happen. Often, one of the two, the patient or the therapist, will want or needs to stop treatment, while the other thinks that the time is not right. One of the reasons for such a situation may be forced termination.
Being given the opportunity to intern with the staff at the Family Resource Center in the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) has been a tremendous learning experience thus far. The opportunity has truly surpassed my expectation of what I imagined the journey of internship would be like and how it would help me to evolve into the professional arena as a social worker. I see myself transforming and viewing the community in which I live, the clients served, those deprived, and the tremendous job that we as social workers are tasked with to advocate for those in need from a more open-minded perspective. By enhancing and developing my personal and professional skills, such as active listening, observation, and professional comportment, I will be
Another thing that I worry about is the fact that two people can come to me with the same problem but they might require different solutions. For example, I have two clients who are addicted to illegal substances and for one client we resolve that he or she should go to rehab well that might not work for the next client because they might have already been to rehab and had an unsuccessful time with it and wants to know if there are other options. This part for me relates back to my excitement about working with different types of people as a social worker because it is interesting but it could also be stressful when it comes to coming up with different solutions for clients with the same issue.

Nobody denies that every client and situation is unique, but there is a general layout out of a treatment plan that can be used thought out the facility to ensure success for the client. The first step in the treatment plan is to screen clients to determine if he/she meets the criteria of the facilities drug, or alcohol program. The facility will use the standard CAGE, of the Substance Abuse Subtitle Screening Inventory questioner as a screening tool. These two screening tools are consist of few questions and require only short answers to determine (American Society of Addiction Medicine, 2012). These tools are easy to use and can be done by any qualified staff according to the ASAM. If more through information is needed then the client will go under an assessment.
#1 You’re Fired could be evaluated through Marxist theory in relation to how both American workers and business owners would react to it. What if everyone had the same opportunity as everyone else? What if a business or a government had the ability to provide that said opportunity, while also doing so at an even cheaper rate? The Immigration Bill of 1990, also known as H1B visa, was created to help the US find engineers and scientist while also providing a pathway to citizenship. Now, this sounds like a cook-cutter deal: giving businesses the option to “fill gaps in the workforce from overseas, with highly skilled employees that cannot be found in the US,” without taking away jobs from those in the United States. The Marxist theory argues
Ending might be difficult when working with a client because there is a termination of a relationship, which can be hard on the client and the social worker, just in different ways. The ending might be hard on a client because they have to cope with whatever problems they have on their own and because they are breaking a schedule in their life which can also be stressful. An ending might be hard for a social worker because they are uncertain about what the client might do, since they are no longer coming to therapy. People’s actions are always unpredictable. All endings, even desire ones or ones we know
A social worker must have the knowledge and skills to apply to intervention strategies that can address key issues through a wide range of tools (Miley, O’Melia & Dubois 2013, p. 7). To devise an intervention plan for the case study, Miley’s (2013, p. 112) four step model is utilised.
Terminating Counseling Sessions and Relationships Termination of services is not always agreement. There are circumstances that develop that can allow a counselor to terminate counseling services against the client’s wishes and better they have received everything the client needs from therapy. According to the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (ACA, 2014, A. 11.c.), counselor’s should provide pre-termination services better ending the counselors service with their clients. Also, the counselor should recommend other services to the client if it is necessary. Therefore, the counselor should discuss termination services with the client in advance before the final session.
A part of a social worker’s task is to enhance the life of an individual through advocacy, educating, and engagement. Positive influence is benefited through the engagement of the client such as building rapport with the individual. By doing this, the social worker develops trusting ground for the individual delivering the message. Engagement is reported to be an establishment of a professional relationship with a client (Langer & Lietz, 2014). If the process of engagement is not established through security of the client, then therapy cannot begin (Bowlby, 1988). This process is the first encounter you have with the social worker.
47). Social workers advise clients how to attain resources, rather than just providing them. The idea is to include clients in their journey to success and feel a sense of control in their life. I personally believe encouraging empowerment is a critical aspect of a social worker’s roles and responsibility. Engaging clients in setting their own goals is essential, and ultimately more beneficial to them. Clients should be able to access resources on their own; additionally, they can use the assistance of friends, families, communities, and organizations. One of the core values of a social worker is, Importance of human relationships. According to the NASW, “Social workers engage people as partners in the helping process” (The National Association, “n. d.”). Empowerment and advocacy are closely connected. I want to advocate for clients, furthermore, I want clients to be able to advocate for
Social Work is a discipline that can be a very rewarding experience for both the worker and the client. The practice involves working with individuals, families, or groups who are struggling to cope with lifes challenges. The social worker must combine his or her personal qualities, creative abilities, and social concerns with the professional knowledge in order to help the client’s social functioning or prevent social problems from developing (Bradford W. Sheafor, 2008, p. 34). Social work practice seeks to promote human well-being, while addressing the processes by which individuals and groups are marginalized or diminished in their capacity to participate as citizens (Ian O'Connor, 2006, p. 1). There are many different perspectives and approaches reviewed by the practitioner to determine a suitable approach towards intervention.
