The man and his crew who searched around the world found it round. They could not believe that what they found was true. He also named the Pacific Ocean which means peaceful or calm. The ship that he was on was special to Magellan. He was born in what is today known as Portugal. His family was proud of him and his accomplishments that he gave the world. Ferdinand Magellan relieved many people by searching for a strait.
Ferdinand began his life in early years. He was born in the year 1480 in what is today Portugal. His career started, “when he was just ten years old, Magellan became a page for the queen” (“Ferdinand”). His family had ties with the royal family which helped Magellan. He also got a very well education due to this opportunity. He was very proud of the schooling that he received. Not very many people in his time got an education like this. During school, “Magellan studied mapmaking and navigation” (“Ferdinand”). These studies helped Magellan set sail. Without these studies, Magellan might not have been the one selected for this. Magellan had first gone to sea once before his big voyage. The adventure that he had been on before helped him with the most important one of all. This specific quest, “he sailed to India with the fleet of Francisco de Almeida” (“Magellan”). This journey did not last very long. Ferdinand’s early life helped him throughout the rest of his life.

The thought of these events in Magellan’s brain was outrageous. He could not believe his workers would do such a thing. Once these events were over, Magellan could get back on with his work.
Most of the people in the world are happy that Magellan did what he did. Magellan will certainly be remembered for his discovery. Without his exploration, no one would have known that the world was a sphere. They would have still thought that the earth was flat. The discovery that Magellan made resulted in many voyages around the world. Magellan should be remembered as a wonderful person. He will never be forgotten even though sometimes he is overlooked. It is thought by many that Christopher Columbus was a skilled sailor on a mission of greed. Many think that he in fact did it all for the money, honor and the status that comes with an explorer, but this is not the case entirely. Columbus was an adventurer and was enthused by the thrill of the quest of the unknown. “Columbus had a firm religious faith and a scientific curiosity, a zest for life, the felling for beauty and the striving for novelty that we associate with the advancement of learning”. He had heard of the legendary Atlantic voyages and sailors reports of land to the west of Madeira and the Azores. He believed that Japan was about 4,800 km to the west of Portugal. In 1484, Columbus wanted support for an exploratory voyage from King John II of Portugal, but he was refused. In 1485, Columbus took his son Diego and went to Spain to get some help.

He was an expert sailor, thus earning the title of “Admiral of the Ocean Sea” for himself after his successful expeditions. He had a favorite ship, Santa Maria although he had two other ships (Nina and Pinta). Like most sailors of his time, he knew that the world was round. However, he assumed the world was smaller and he believed he could go on a successful expedition to Asia in search of wealth.

At that time the crew and Columbus had strong intentions of reaching what they thought was the East Indies (Burdette 26). However, the crews were a week and a half out from Spain. They were sure they were near land. It could have been just a see bird or the weeds growing on the Sargasso Sea. Magellan was psycho and would do whatever he had to to get things his way. Magellan’s one of many dreams was to convert everyone to christianity and if they denied his request they were punished . Christopher Columbus was a teenager when he first set sail the ocean in 1465. He became a sailor in 1476 and started to travel many places before going on his largest voyage in 1480. In 1492, Christopher Columbus exploration to the New World linked Europe and the Americas. His discoveries enlightened the globe and started a new age of exploration. His standards and morals changed the history of the whole globe. He was known for traveling for all types of reasons for many foreign monarchs. But why would a monarch from one country be interested in employing an explorer from a foreign country to complete such an important task?
When the crew got to San Sebastian they rescued the men but could not escape. Every time they tried to sail away they were attacked by the Indians and they were running low on their food too. Then Balboa proposed a plan of sailing to a land that had lots of food. The men all agreed and ended up docking in a village. They named this village Santa Maria de la Antigua del Darién. The Indians in the area had a plethora of gold. However Martin Enciso was the leader of the crew and he recognized that the Indians there had a lot of gold, so he passed a law that only he could trade for gold. The crew was enraged and decided to select another leader. The men chose Vasco Balboa and soon after Enciso left for Spain. This left Balboa in charge of Darién. In 1511 Balboa was serving as an interim governor in the settlement Darién. Balboa dealt the Spaniards that were under him harshly so that Balboa could get riches. He ended up leaving to explore Panama and captured several villages. Vasco then led a group of 190 Spanish soldiers and 800 Indians and crossed the Isthmus of Panama. When Balboa was exploring one day he looked out on top of a mountain pinnacle and looked out. In the years leading up to and including 1491, European explorers had been researching and studying the world, however they lacked a real understanding of the true size and geography of our planet. When explorers finally began setting out on their expeditions in the late 1400’s, the world began to experience serious change. Before Columbus is credited with the discovery of America in 1492, the Americas were untouched by Europeans, but within a few hundred years permanent settlements would be founded on American soil despite the presence of the native people. In 1492, Christopher Columbus set sail on a voyage searching for a route across the Atlantic to Asia for the Spain’s King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Instead of reaching Asia, Columbus actually landed on present-day San Salvador Island.
Who was Amerigo Vespucci? This is a question I asked myself as I was researching the man credited with the discovery of the new world. Much information has been written about Christopher Columbus and very little about Amerigo Vespucci. To understand who Amerigo Vespucci was is to look at his life and times in that time period. This paper is an attempt to look at his history and try to get a better understanding of his life in the “Age of Discovery”. To have an understanding of Vespucci is to remember that to the day of his death, Columbus persisted in claiming he was in parts of Asia. This is part of the old world mentality and shows that Columbus never fully comprehended the achievements of his voyages. Two continents are named after Amerigo Vespucci. A great achievement for a man who many feel is a charlatan of geography. Did he discover America or was this honor bestowed on the wrong man?
Around the time of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, Europe was a place in need of inspiration. Marco Polo, a merchant, and still a simple man, was this source of inspiration. He was an ordinary boy during his childhood, living a similar life to the other boys his age. Although his intentions might not have been as significant as his impact, he was very influential. Marco Polo served as an influence to many later explorers. Whether it was through his book, The Travels of Marco Polo, which focused mainly on descriptions of spices and commercial goods and many other interesting trade items he encountered in his travels, he sparked an interest and desire of not only Europe, but later explorers as well . Marco Polo was viewed to have had definite charm and also having much capability. He has also proven that he was a tough man. This is evident because of the many voyages he survived, which included occurrences of bandit ambushes, disease, and not to mention the fatigue of the travel. There have been many who believe that Marco Polo was not intellectually equipped, meaning that he was not a very educated man, as no European probably was at the time . But as always, there is of course some speculation on the many aspects of the life of Marco Polo. Many people have their own beliefs of whom the real Marco Polo was and what he accomplished. There will be mention on some of the alleged negative, yet also positive aspects of his life. Despite all the accusations or assumptions of Marco Polo, history was affected as a result of his existence. He still remains an important figure in history.
