Feminist Reflection The topic of abortion has been highly debated among various political, religious, and social groups for decades. As someone who has not spent a lot of time in the past studying feminist beliefs, I have always assumed that all feminists support the right to choose. Upon further research, I realize now that it is narrow-minded and naïve to assume that all feminists follow a singular belief system. Researching feminist views on the topic of abortion has helped me to further reflect on my own beliefs about feminism, abortion, and women’s rights and how these beliefs may influence my practice as a health care provider. I also felt frustrated that although Ms. Hatten (2014) raised some good points about the issues with the pro-choice belief system, she failed to discuss how being pro-life supports feminism and women’s rights. This is something I would have liked for her to explore further, as it may have strengthened her argument. Overall, this activity helped me to further explore my belief system and how it may impact my future as family nurse practitioner. As a healthcare provider, my natural inclination is to support my patients’ rights to make their own decisions about their health and to ensure that they receive safe and unbiased health care. Because of this, I will endeavor to provide a supportive environment and ensure that they have all of the tools, education, and resources necessary to make informed decisions about their health. Exploring feminism and various opinions on women’s rights has helped me to thoroughly examine my own beliefs. Abortion has always been a complicated topic for me. I often find that my personal and religious beliefs may at times conflict with my belief that women should have the right to make decisions about their own bodies.
