Felix Mendelssohn was born as Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy on February 3, 1809 in Hamburg, Germany. Felix married Cécile Jeanrenaud on March 28, 1837. He died November 4, 1847 in Leipzig, Germany. The musical time period he lived in was the early romantic period. Felix was born to Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn who were founders and members of a Jewish Liberal Society and were considered affluent in the Jewish society. Felix’s parents converted from Judism to Christianity before Felix, his brother, Paul, and 2 sisters, Fanny and Rebecka, were born. When Felix was 2 years old his family moved to Berlin, Germany where Felix began taking piano lessons from Ludwig Berger, a famous composer at the time. Felix was the grandson to the philosopher Moses Mendelssohn. His parents name where Abraham and Lea Mendelssohn. One of his sisters was named Fanny and she was also a famous composer. In 1843 Mendelssohn founded the conservatory of music in Leipzig where he taught composition to various students. Felix was supposed to return home for Fanny’s wedding on the way he got into a carriage accident and hurt his knee which made the trip impossible. Over his life he was a conductor, a pianist, and a composer. Some of his music wasn't published until after his death he was known to have kept his music to himself and family.
The song I listened to was A Midsummer NIght’s Dream. This song was slow at the beginning and had a sad feeling and was played very quietly; eventually it speed up and was happy and was medium loud. It speed up again and was very happy and loud. There was a flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horns, cymbals, and strings. This song made me feel happy because most of it was up beat.
