The Origins of My Interests
Becoming a retail buyer is something I have thought lots about in the last few years. I’m almost sure this exactly what I want to become after I graduate high school and go into college. I absolutely love shopping and to be a shopper as a career and pick out different styles for stores, would be amazing.
This profession also has a large business aspect to it and that intrigues me a lot. I have grown up always listening to my dad talk about business and the market and how “the business world” is very important, I’ve have just become more and more interested in finding out all about that. The world of fashion is something that I have always wanted to be a part of, and now, I am working my way there.
There are still many things that I want to learn and find out about the profession of a retail buyer, such as:
What’s the best city for me to go to to pursue this career?
Will I get to travel around the world and buy the fashion items from other countries?
How much quantity will I need for the stores?
What’s the best school for me to go to?
Is it best to buy for big department stores or little boutiques?
How long will a style last until I have to go and change up everything?
Will I work with a group if people, like a buying team?
What type of business do I study exactly in college?

Where I work now, there is a lady who is the buyer for our business, and buys all the clothing items and products that the customers demand. I can talk to her about her job and get a feel for what it is like. Helping her buying the product and deciding which ones to purchase would help me a great deal in this career. The retail industry is as old as human civilizations, and it’s worth noting the retail sector is much better geared to change than most sectors. Over the past couple of decades there has been a wide range of changes in the retailing business. The retail sector dates back to the early 1800’s when the first local corner store sold common household items and basic groceries. As its name states, the corner store was just that, stores strategically placed on corners on high foot traffic areas for easy access. As society started to grow so did the need for new consumer goods and how a consumer would reach those goods. Department stores became popular simply because they were able to offer an assortment of categories and a variety of items within those categories all under one roof. The first two cities to start developing large scale department stores were New York City, and Chicago. In New York in 1846, the first building was built offering a variety of goods at fixed prices that were shipped from Europe. Department stores moved away from the idea of bartering and all items sold were considered fixed. However, department stores did offer discounts and coupons as a way to get customers in the door. In 1862, the largest department store was built during this time in New York City. The department store was on a full city block with eight floors and nineteen departments of dress goods, furnishing materials, carpets, fine china, toys and sports equipment. All these items were arranged around a central glass-covered court. The glass windows quickly became a staple in the department stores design. Mariam Rahman has formed a wide skill base in retail and administration. Mariam’s administration skills have been built from 2014- 2016 under two professions. Mariam has studied as an apprentice in business administration, which is clear to see why she has led to further her studies at university. Mariam has given retail an opportunity where it has endorsed her skills to be a good customer service representative at Argos. Mariams summary of herself is a short personal statement where it seems to appeal more so, to a retail employer where she expresses her dedication to be a good team worker and also linking her skill to her abilities.
Though I self taught myself to illustrate and sew my designs, I have taken sewing and arts classes to aid my portfolio ideas. I have challenged myself to do sewing design projects by setting a designated due date wear or display my work. For instance I had challenged myself to illustrate and design my junior prom dress in less than month. The same thing can go for my DIY track pants, dresses and costumes in which i had given myself a good week to organize, prepare, and present the clothing in which I am proud of. When I was young, I had a large appeal with fashion week. My friend and I would impersonate the runway models in my living room, dressing up in my mother’s clothes and laying stuffed animals out like attendees. This fascination carried into high school, I found it as an opportunity to demonstrate my style to a larger audience. Fashion week was intriguing to me because it provided a way to express myself in a unique way and show a side of my own creativity. I anticipated this project would give me a chance to learn more about the role fashion week plays in society.
Retail work is best known for low pay, difficult customers, and long shifts. Although this is at times true, retail work can teach people valuable lessons and skills that are used on and off the job. As a Sears sales associate, I spent my last summer working in retail, enduring both tiresome hours and demanding buyers. Through this experience, I learned tricks and skills that are useful to survive a job in retail.
My father is in the real estate field and I aim to follow to his steps and push boundaries and reach new heights as his successor. Ever since I was in elementary school, I have had inclinations of engaging in commerce. My introduction to commerce was through one of my passions: basketball. Nearly every Saturday morning I would line up outside the local sneaker store and purchase the most desirable releases and resell them. I was able to pick up the general act of buying and selling and I currently run an online shop where I continue this trade. Even the slowdown in current global economies could not bring retail sector down as retailers keep seeking for opportunities overseas to avoid challenging economic condition, which make this sector becoming more globalised and competitive. As an heir of an industrial components retailer, I also believe there are bountiful opportunities to grow in this emerging industry. But without deeply and truly understanding in every aspect of retailing, one could not survive in the battle. For this reason, I would like to pursue my education further by studying Master in retail management to obtain knowledge in retailing and hopefully become successful in the field.
From the moment I starting my educational path I knew four years wouldn’t be enough to fill me with all the dimensions of the fashion industry. This led me to make my decision to apply for the M.S. Global Fashion Enterprise degree. When asked how this program at Philadelphia University would benefit me, I will begin by giving a background on my previous education. I started my undergraduate degree at Buffalo State College in upstate New York pursuing a Bachelor degree in Fashion Merchandising. After being in the program for a year I was confident in knowing I needed a change. My journey changed drastically when I moved down to sunny Fort Lauderdale, Florida where I transferred to the Art Institute under the same major. I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fashion Merchandising come this June 2014. My experience at the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale has uncovered my love of education and research.
After learning about a website which allowed the bulk purchasing of consumer goods directly from China, I created an online retail store to individually sell said goods at a high mark up. I still continue to do this today and have since branched out to the reselling of used electronics as well. The fashion industry is a utopia, of silk and suede and, shoes and belts. It is a place where flowers smell of Chanel and Givenchy; and trees bear diamonds and rubies, where extravagant living is a reality; and thin women walk down the many streets with hot cups of espressos every fraction of a second. And this industry is not just the fourth largest in the world, but also the most loved! Millions have found livelihood here. Millions try everyday to find their place. And the options for them are many- designer, model, photographer, choreographer, stylist- the list is endless! But is it as simple as it looks? With the cut-throat competition in current times, it's very difficult to carve out your own niche in this industry. To land up in a job of your interest is both difficult and stressful. After months of spamming mails and giving out resumes, when one does land up with a job, they might think that they are not cut-out for it. What then? Start with the whole cycle of spamming and searching again? No. An internship is a better option. But is an unpaid internship the right way to go about it? That's the real question.
...is instilled in me, that I must gain as much knowledge as possible in order to succeed in life. In the fashion industry, one must continue to learn about the world around them in order to keep up with the changes in the industry. There are many different ways today that I can keep up with what is going on in the fashion world without going to school, but school will prepare me for the challenges that are to come. The only previous work experience that I had working in a fashion was at Mortal Kombat. I did not stay at the job very long because of personal issues that I had with staff. I feel that I need to get involved in some type of fashion job so that I can network better. Networking is essential in the fashion business, because you may never see people that you want to talk to but word-of-mouth can open doors that lead you in the direction that you wanted to go.
I enjoy making sketches of clothing that one day will hopefully be available in stores all over. Fashion designing in my opinion is a way to express the unique side of your creativity, also fashion designing is a career that I believe I can achieve in so highly if I stay focused and continue to putting forth effort in my creations. I could see interior designing as a possible career in my future because it’s somewhat similar to fashion designing just in the designing area. Both involve having a since of style and an eye for color, texture and pattern coordination.
