Fashion Throughout Generations
Fashion is an interesting thing. It is often said that it is recycled. I have even heard people from different generations say “ I use to wear that back in my day”. I find it so fascinating, that I would sit and wonder if the clothes that I am wearing now was once the style of previous generations in my family. Through the years, fashion has been created, recycled and even it even faded away. Have the fashion trends throughout the generations of my family followed any parts of the cycle?
My grandmother, Yvonne Fisher, would have followed the fashion trends of the 60’s. I spoke to her recently and she mentioned that she wore mostly dresses. My grandmother’s decade contributed to my generation’s fashion trends with a line dresses and the Mary Jane shoes. Many people wear the Mary Jane style today because of its simple, but cute style. It can be paired with almost any outfit perfectly. Plus, I have always found the shift dresses cute, but I would look like a time traveler wearing them now. My mother’s generation contributed to the 21st century’s styles greatly. Many of our trends today are a blast from the past for my mother. It basically tickles her fancy every time she sees me in outfit like her old ones. From ripped jeans, to acid washed, and from the t shirts to the crop tops. They also influenced a lot of our hairstyles today, mostly black people. In the 90’s they rocked braided (poetic justice braids), straight or even curly extensions, they have picked up from the past and made it their own. These trends have been passed down to this generation, and are still fully alive today. So, yes, the fashion trends throughout the generations in my family have been recycled and have faded
Their style was introduced in the early 1910s but did not spark until the 1920s. The style was said to be more comfortable, but was not appealing to the more conservative. Before the change of style, most women were dressed modestly; however, women's fashion in the 1920s showcased a more “boyish” and comfortable, look which led to huge controversy and affects how women dress today. Although to society now, these changes may not be seen as a big deal, back then it would split society.
1965 say the change in women’s fashion from the 1950’s tight blouse, even tighter waist and poof, knee length dress into slacks and sweaters. Women all over the world was running out to buy labels from Britain, the birthplace of vinyl knee boots and geometric fashion.
In comparing the sixties and the nineties, my first thought was how much popular culture has changed since then and how different society is today. The strange thing is, the more I tried to differentiate between them, the more similarities I found. Both the sixties and the nineties were about youth, creativity, free-thinking, and expression. With the nineties coming to a close and the popularity of anything ?retro," I decided to compare the fashions, people, music, and issues that defined pop culture in the 1960?s and its influence on pop culture in the 1990?s.
Have you ever seen the movie Great Gatsby? You would think the clothing today was totally different from the 20’s. Gatsby’s clothes was fun and colorful. In the 1920’s fashion became a huge thing for women because they were giving the right to vote.
The advancement from conservative to liberal thinking, eventually resulted in revolutionary changes in cultural fabric of American life. The 60s was a decade of sweeping change throughout the fashion world. Previously, fashion was aimed at mainly the wealthy and the mature elites, but as the decade began to unfold, the tastes and preferences of the youngsters became important. Parisian designers dominated the beginning of the decade with their outstanding ability to implement their own ideas into their clothing.
If we didn’t have fashion then a lot of people wouldn’t have jobs because there are a whole bunch of fashion designers out there, also all of the celebrities wouldn’t have name brand clothing because there would be no way to make them because we wouldn’t have designers. Fashion of the 1920’s played a very big role in today’s fashion. Including the material our clothing is made out of also the styles of clothing we wear. Many things women wear today first came from fashion in the 1920's. Flappers, shoe styles, and accessories are a few things that we wear today have came from. Many celebrities still wear some things that people wore in the 1920's including flappers. Have you ever wondered what the amazing fashion of the 1920's was like?
Although clothing styles change from generation to generation, the newest fad is always a result of the old. It’s a cause and effect relationship, if children of this generation are dressing inappropriately, future generations will find this acceptable and go a step further. If clothing restrictions are enforced in the now, there is hope for future generations.
The decade was known for breaking many fashion traditions. In the beginning of the decade, 1963 to be more specific was when the bikinis became very popular in the fashion industry after being seen by many in the musical beach party. A women named Mary Quant was the reason why the mini skirt became popular, and Jackie Kennedy introduced the pillbox hat. Women throughout the decade wore false eyelashes, and their hairstyles were all diverse in lengths and styles. Men simply wore highlighter colors and mismatched patterns. The first few trends was during the Roman Empire and it was to do more with hairstyles, wigs and cosmetics rather than garments. Between the fifth and the eleventh centuries AD, men and women dressed in loose robes as influenced by Christianity. Dresses are also used as a medium to distinguish classes. Working class wore wool with rough materials and less ornaments. The style of dress began to change in the twelfth century as women’s dresses are tighter to the shapes. It wasn’t until the revolutionary Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ in 1947 that marked a new page in the fashion history. The timing also made it significant since it was 2 years after the World War 2 in which most fashion editors were already convinced that fashion was heading for a dead end. After the launch of the New Look, the public began to take more interest once again.
Women used to dress very conservatively and strict before the turn of the decade. Clothing consisted of fitted dresses, long skirts, and corsets in lady like manners. Since the 1920’s brought women’s rights along, young women decided that they were not willing to waste away their young lives anymore being held down to the rules; they were going to enjoy life. The younger generations of women were breaking away from their old habits and their fashion statements changed their roles in society completely. Talking to various members of my family I asked them if they could remember the way that the youth dressed in the nineteen- fifties. The responses were all similar. The popular man role wore tight white T- shirts which were described to me (I hate this expression)as ‘Guinea T’s.’ These are white T- shirts in which the manufacturer cut- off the sleeves. Also regular white T- shirts were worn with one sleeve rolled up with a pack of cigarettes. When I talked to a man in my neighborhood, John Braggs, he explained to me that the modern style of wearing your pants low on your hips actually began in the fifties. He said that they wore tight jeans that were pulled down low at the waist with of course a tight white T- shirt tucked in. "I don’t know where y’all started wearen’ ‘em so baggy from, but I don’t like it," he shouted in his southern accent. The females were not as revealing as the modern women are. Longer dresses and dressier shirts were their style. The ‘Beatnik’! generation was forming out of Grenitch village in Manhattan which the style was more of a depressing look. They wore mostly black or darker colors. I watched a movie called ‘The Wanderers’ to try to take a look at how they dressed and the portrayal was what I just described.

Many people would not believe that there are so many similarities between modern day fashion and the fashion of the renaissance time period. Many differences may be seen between the two, but the similarities are remarkable. Throughout all of time, clothing has been the major representation of social classes. What people wear has always been the distinguishing factor between the wealthy and the poor classes of both the renaissance and current time period. The evolution from time period to time period has been vast, but the fact that what people wear represents what class they reside in is still very prevalent. From the fabrics, jewels, and accessories, you can still see many similarities from the renaissance time period to the current time period. “…much of what we know about historical dress comes from the apparel of the elite.” (Sauro) Although much time has progressed, fashion from the renaissance period has held a strong influence on the fashion in today’s society.
Moreover, many products were luxurious in the 80s because the economy recovered during that period. Modern fashion is meaningful; it brings many changes and has a huge influence on general life. Heskett (2002) mentioned that it not only changes the lifestyle, but also changes the minds of a generation.
Marketing, advertising, and the media all try to influence the way our generation dresses. Their reasons are mainly profit based. We also make our clothing choices based on the Functionality of the garment. Consumers of our generation often look at the comfort, durability, and adaptability of a piece before purchasing. History has had a great influence on the look of most clothing worn today. Clothes reminiscent of the past are often known as "retro" which has become one of the signature styles of Generation Y. Clothing also helps us to express ourselves. Youth often choose clothing to reflect their unique personality. These factors are explained further below.
