The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, takes place in a dystopian society where they ban literature, drown out social interaction with modern technology, and anyone who merges outside of these societal rules are oppressed in cruel and inhumane ways. At the beginning of the book, the protagonist Guy Montag is a part of this toxic dystopian cycle until he is introduced to many characters that influence him to change and develop new characteristics. From Clarisse he learns happiness, Faber, he learns friendship, and from Granger he learns leadership. Montag meets Clarisse one night as he is walking home from his job as a fireman. After the first few encounters Montag has with her, Bradbury makes it clear to the reader that Clarisse is characterized as the optimistic, fun-loving, young soul that eventually changes Montag's perspective about life. Clarisse is a free spirit that loves to climb trees and pick flowers. However, one of the things she does impacts Montag in such a way that it might have led to the outcome of the whole story. During their first encounter, Granger is very welcoming and understanding towards him. Once again, it is obvious to the reader that Granger has experience with leadership skills because of the small group book keepers he has lead for many years. However, the leadership that Montag is introduced to takes place around when Granger explains his societal plans to Montag. “You did what you had to do...All we want to do is keep the knowledge we think we will need intact and safe...For if we are destroyed, the knowledge is dead, perhaps for good”’ (145). This opens Montag's mind in a way that allows him to step up as a leader.
