Facebook Community Of Practice

Whilst Facebook was not initially intended or created for education purposes it has the ability to generate potentials for social learning. According to Pappas (2014), in a learning environment a lecturer or facilitator can create a closed or secret group in Facebook to share course material, pose questions, create a poll to seek feedback and ultimately promote collaboration amongst members.

This is also true in the case of the research carried out as part of this project, a closed Facebook group was created and used to share articles, Ted Talks and course material and sought feedback and comments from the participants in an attempt at promoting and encouraging collaboration.

According to Wegner and Trayner (2015) 3 characteristics are crucial to real communities of practice:

1. The Domain
2. The Community
3. The Practice

The Domain – A community of practice is not a just a network or club of individuals but one which has a shared interest amongst its members. There is a shared competence which distinguishes the members of the domain from others. Members value each others abilities and learn from each other, there is also mutual engagement and respect.

The Community – Members of the domain share with each other, engage in joint initiatives and help each other. Through the domain members build relationships that allow for learning from each other. Therefore, to be a community of practice members must interact with and learn from each other.

The Practice - the community must include practitioners, they should be expert in their field and be able to share stories, skills, best practices and develop a shared repertoire of resources and
