External factors attributed to Sonny’s suffering include drugs, poverty, and control. Sonny’s friend recommends drugs for him. Consequently, drugs caused Sonny’s addiction and then the suffering. Sonny was born poor and grew up in Harlem, where poverty is ubiquitous. Poverty leads to crime. Sonny could not escape from Harlem first because his father did not want to move, then because his brother wanted him to stay. Hence, he has to keep suffering due to poverty. Sonny’s brother attempts to control his life, pushing him to return to school and live in his in-law’s home to practice piano, which were not Sonny’s willings. Instead, Sonny wanted to escape Harlem and join the military, then become a musician. Therefore, Sonny frequently truanted from school and goofed around in Greenwich Village. In short, Sonny suffered from his brother’s control. He practiced diligently, day in and day out in order to communicate his pain. When Sonny played jazz, he worked hard and looked troubled. When Sonny played the piano, he moved deep within, exactly like someone in torment. He filled his instrument with the breath of his own life. Sonny played blues music unhurriedly yet very intensively, making himself soaking wet. Finally when he let out his breath, he made himself grin. This is the way Sonny utilizes music to communicate his pain.
Most of Sonny’s pain originates from drugs. Initially, one of Sonny’s friends went to school high; Sonny asked him how it felt and the friend told him that it felt great. That is the way Sonny starts taking drugs just because his friends in the community were doing that and attempt to lure him.
