As a sociologist, conducting research outside of the laboratory in a structured manner is necessary to produce accurate results. Sociologists conduct research outside of the laboratory to better learn about the people they are analyzing. Many different types of research are used by a sociologist to better understand the phenomena they are researching. Lastly, sociologists use the scientific method to provide structure and repeatability to their research. To gather unbiased data, sociologists conduct experiments outside of the laboratory and follow the scientific method. Sociologists conduct research to better understand how people interact with each other and the society around them. Sociologists conduct exploratory research with the goal of better understanding a new social phenomenon or other social action. Explanatory research is used by sociologists to explain how or why people do or not do certain actions. A use of exploratory research is to better understand how marketing would affect if a consumer would purchase the product. The third type of research employed by sociologist is evaluative research. Evaluative research is used to determine how well an organization or company is meeting certain sociological goals. Evaluative research is used by a company to measure how well they are meeting their goals and the best way to change to better meet the said goals. Last, sociologist use descriptive research to better explain society. Descriptive research is used to study a social reality such as people in prison re-entering to free society.
