Common sense is knowledge not based on a formal investigation, but the ideas that we pick up from people and our surroundings, mixed with our ideas from our own experiences. Most of these ideas are true, but many other common sense ideas are false, so we conduct tests to eliminate and confirm the accurate ideas. Common sense is inadequate when it comes to giving accurate and reliable information. Common sense only gives us some of the information, and is not always on target. Sociologists cannot draw conclusions that are based on guesses, superstition, or common sense. Sociologists must gather information that represents people’s attitudes and behaviors accurately.
