Many people who do not understand the importance of play for children and degrade the idea that children are allowed to play especially free play instead of structured learning activities. As those of us who are care providers and early childhood educators know; children learn as they play and, while playing, they learn how to learn. According to Sue Palmer, “Play is the name we give to children’s inborn wish to explore their world” (London, 2010). Tim Gill goes on to expand on this idea of play by saying, “They are kind of exploring uncertainty; they’re taking themselves beyond what they know and understand and into what they are curious about what they want to find out about” (London, 2010). Play has many benefits to children’s development. Practice/functional play helps build sensory/motor skills in infants and toddlers. Active play helps build gross motor skills. Exploratory play helps build fine motor skills. Representational play helps build language skills. (London, 2010). “Some studies have also confirmed that play promotes higher-order thinking” (Jaruszewicz, 2012). Play provides children with opportunities to practice the rules that adult and society set without fear of making a mistake or being punished. (Jaruszewicz, 2012).
I enjoyed reading the article “The Importance of Play – Activities for Children.” I especially liked the opening lines, “Play is special for children. Not only is it fun, but it is also important for healthy development. It is their “work” and their way of learning about the world. Through play, children try out new skills, explore their imagination and creativity, and develop relationships with other people in their lives” (Child Action, n.d.). I especially enjoyed reading in more detail the types of play, levels of play and ideas to promote play in each age
