Just a young girl born in Wisconsin and raised by her grandparents. Not much different than a lot of children these days. That is what you are probably thinking at least, but there is a lot more to Tammy Baldwin than you are aware. Tammy Baldwin uses her courageous acts to not only help America as a whole, but to be a role model for anyone who is afraid to follow their dreams because they are different than others. Tammy has been a fighter since she was young. At just nine years old she was stuck battling an illness said to be similar to spinal meningitis. This illness placed her in the hospital and left her grandparents fighting to find insurance willing to cover Tammy. She graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 1984. From there she went on to receive her law degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1989 (McNamee). She started off her career in politics early by filling an aldermanic vacancy during college on the Madison Common Council. Tammy also served on other councils such as the Dane County Board of Supervisors from 1986-1994 and Wisconsin’s State Assembly in 1992. These smaller councils kick started her to a large career in politics (McNamee). By the year 1998 Tammy was already running for the U.S House of Representatives, where she remained from 1999 to 2013. While in office she helped lead the Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act (McNamee). Due to past experiences of her own she pushed to allow people to stay on their parents’ insurance plans longer, until age 26. While being courageous and following her own dreams she is also motivating others to do the same. Tammy gives attention to things that normally get overlooked more than they should. Such as helping give veterans, military families, and the current soldiers the gratitude and support that they have worked so hard for. She works to try and keep them safer as they put their lives on the line to fight so hard for all of us and our country (“About Tammy | U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin.”). Tammy’s courage to be herself is what sets her apart from other politicians. Some people may not believe that being the first woman and/or the first openly gay person to take part in such great things is a big deal, but I believe that it is. She opened the door of opportunity for a lot of women as well as other gay people. She has shown, and continues to show, that gender and sexuality does not define who you are as a person. Women are just as capable as men. But Tammy doesn’t use this as an excuse. It has been said that “though Baldwin’s sexual orientation makes her victory notable, it rarely came up during the campaign, unless it was called a non issue”
Feinstein is serving as a senator for 21years (1992-present). She is the legislative committee member of Appropriations, Judiciary, Rules and Administration, and she is the committee Chair of Select Committee on Intelligence. In her first term as a senator, she co-authored the Gun Free Schools Act and the Hate Crimes Sentencing Enhancement Act in 1994. Also she led legislation banning sale and possession of military-style assault weapons.
The oldest currently serving US Senator, Dianne Feinstein, has done her share of leading our Senators and fighting to keep our country safe and free of crime. Feinstein is a member of the Democratic Party, as well as the former thirty-eighth mayor of San Francisco. Eight years after being elected into the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1970, Feinstein served as the board’s first female president. The assassinations of Mayor George Moscone and City Supervisor Harvey Milk caused Feinstein to succeed as mayor of San Francisco in 1978. While Feinstein served as San Francisco’s first female mayor she renovated the cable car system and oversaw the 1984 Democratic National Convention.
Anita Bryant was an Anti-Gay Activist with no past political history yet, she was still a huge reason a lot of people in the 70’s were anti-gay. “Bryant’s background… hardly gave her credentials as an authority on homosexuality...Unfortunately, gay activists had little knowledge about how the media works. Bryant was pretty… if baited too far, she did marvelously telegenic things… that was all she needed. As far as the media… was concerned, she was an authority on homosexuality”(156). Even though she had little knowledge about what gay people were actually like and gave out untrue statistics multiple times, because she was pretty and famous, it basically gave her a right to talk about subjects she was uneducated on. It just shows how unfair gay people had it because they were in the minority. It also again, shows the demonization of the LGBT
There are rare cases, when society has to make the tough decision to overlook a person's basic rights for the good of the general public, Mary Mallon is one of these exceedingly rare cases. Mary Mallon was a carrier of Typhoid fever, because of this she was denied her way of life and her passion. Typhoid left an abysmal impression on Mary’s life, but she did not let let sickness define who she was. Mary left a lasting mark in her own subtle way, her life was more paramount than meets the eye, she opened the eyes of scientists all over the world and taught the world a near impossible lesson about never giving in.
Besides being showcased to the public as a medical rarity by her physician, patient L faced a multitude of other various problems with the Sutter Davis staff. When she first arrived to the hospital, the woman working at the front desk greeted her poorly. Patient L was told by the woman that “’[she] had to wait her turn,’ even though nobody else was there.” In the middle of filling out some medical paperwork, a young child and his mother walked into the hospital about ten minutes after patient L did. Within minutes of walking in, the two of them were called upon to see a doctor. The list of accomplishments that this woman has, is outstanding. She is an inspiration to any emerging leader, no matter their race, gender, or age. Rice has set a tone for young individuals by striving for her goals, but also letting life lead her in its own path and by not letting others impact her with negativity or cause her to take her mind off of her goals. She also has proved herself as a successful leader in politics. This has helped woman break the barrier and we will continue seeing more woman politicians in higher leadership

She never dropped out like many of her peers until she had to help her dying grandmother. Rosa Parks risked her life as an upstander for African American equality, and inspired many others to follow in her footsteps. Rosa Parks did multiple things to relive the title upstander. She stood up for her rights, started a boycott, and changed the daily lives
On January 25, 1972, Chisholm announced her candidacy for president. She stood before the cameras and in the beginning off her speech she said, “I stand before you today as a candidate for the Democratic nomination for the Presidency of the United States. I am not the candidate of black America, although I am black and proud. I am not the candidate of the women’s of this country, although I am a woman, and I am equally proud of that. I am not the candidate of any political bosses or special interest. I am the candidate of the people.” Though Shirley did not win a single primary during the 1972 presidential election, she captured over 150 votes on the first ballot and later said her campaign had been a necessary “catalyst for change.” Shirley went on to serve for ten more years in the House and retired in 1982 after seven terms in congress.
If it was not for Rosa Parks, the United States would still have segregation in the world. She refused to give her seat up on the bus, to help get rights for African Americans. By not giving up her seat to a white man, Rosa Parks has started the cause of the civil rights movement in the United States. This helps all African Americans get rights in America. Rosa Parks got a lot of rewards and had a husband that felt the same way as she did about African Americans. Today, African Americans have rights in the United States, thanks to Rosa
