Many modern day people desire to live a life in the lap of luxury. For some this includes residing in lavish homes, driving expensive cars, and wearing designer clothes straight from the runway this is a life many people would love to achieve. This lifestyle is one that you could describe simply with one word opulent. Likewise, in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald this is not a desire of many of the primary characters because they do indeed live an opulent lifestyle. The amount of money Gatsby spent to throw such elaborate parties was a way to display to his guest the great amount of disposable income he had and how he was truly able to live in pure opulence.
