Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the theme, outward appearances can be deceptive, is shown between the main characters in the book. The novel is based on the luxurious and carefree lifestyle of the people during the 1920s expressed through the main character. Gatsby’s identity and Daisy and Tom’s marriage expresses the novel’s theme that everything is not what it appears to be. In the beginning of the novel, Gatsby appears to be a well-educated and wealthy man to his guests because of the lavish parties he throws in his huge mansion. He drives a Rolls Royce and has many servants and gardeners.
