Jealousy: The Root of All Evil There are many character traits that play a part in defining our personality and reputation. Some of these traits are more desirable than others. For example, being studious, sweet, wise, and dependable are all positive traits many wish to possess. By contrast, being snobbish, stubborn, hateful and cold-hearted are considered undesirable traits. It is important to note that often times those who possess a number of undesirable traits are not well-liked people. In movies and plays it is often times the antagonist or evil villain who possess such traits. In the tragedy King Lear, Edmund, Goneril and Regan are all jealous people. For some, jealousy can cause them to strive towards gaining the traits, physical attributes, or material items another person has. This can be a positive thing; a person’s jealousy can push them to become the best of versions of themselves they can. Unfortunately, often times jealousy fuels a persons hatred of others, and causes them to act in negative ways they normally would not. The causes of jealousy vary, but are normally rooted in a persons own insecurities. There is often times the character who wants to be popular, or the jealous ex girlfriend who wants revenge. Although these characters are often times displayed as women, in King Lear, the reader learns how universally detrimental the character trait of jealousy can be. King Lear is a tragedy that is fueled by deception, ignorance, and jealousy. Gloucester and King Lear are tricked into thinking their good children are not trustworthy. Goneril and Edmund spend their time lying and scheming to help alleviate their severe jealousy. Meanwhile, good characters like Edgar, Gloucester, and Cordelia are left trying to pick up the broken pieces left behind.
