Through imagery, foreshadow and theme “Saving Private Ryan” is able to portray a story about war while being a literary masterpiece. “Saving Private Ryan” successfully uses extremely vivid imagery to display how horrible war is. In the opening scene of the movie the US troops are invading the beaches of Normandy in the battle of D-Day which is known as one the most violent battles of WWII. This shocking beginning puts the audience right into the heavy reality of war. There are many images of people being brutally injured or killed and is able to accurately show what WWII and more specifically D-Day was like. Saving Private Ryan: Cultural Analysis “Saving Private Ryan” is set during World War II; however, it still greatly affects our current society through helping people understand how bad war really is. World War II was almost 75 years ago, but war is war and is always extremely violent. When “Saving Private Ryan” first came out it shocked a lot of people because many regular people have never witnessed the horrors of war before. In one scene Captain Miller says “I just know that every man I kill the farther away from home I feel” (Miller). Which shows how much killing hurts people even though they might try to rationalize it in their mind. Also by showing how the soldiers think and feel about war it helps the audience to be able to understand the toll that war takes on soldiers. The reason the movie starts out with the soldiers invading Normandy is to show people that war is not a joke and many people die for the United States. In a later scene while the US is fighting in the streets of Germany, Private Jackson yells “Get down Parker”, and a tank then shoots and kills Parker and Jackson (Jackson).
