The Crucible

The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is a story written to show the complications and confliction the Salem Witch Trials had on the people of Salem. Throughout the story, there are many conflicts that are portrayed within the community of Salem, but there is one dispute that stands out more than any other. A few years back before the witch trials,John and Abigail had an affair when she use to work for the Proctor family. When Elizabeth Proctor caught wind of the affair that took place during Abigail’s employment, she immediately fired her. After Abigail was fired, things got immensely awkward between John and Elizabeth since she discovered what was going on.

Soon after, John gets Mary Warren and assertively tells her that the group of girls need to confess faking their supernatural senses so that Elizabeth may be free of false charges. In the end releasing everyone else who had been accused of witchcraft be from jail and charges towards them. This is not how this scene ended up turning out; Mary Warren broke under the pressure that she was put in and tells the whole courthouse that John was forcing her to confess that the accounts were fake. She runs outside with John trying to chase her down, which then attracts the attention of the courthouse to crowd around the two’s argument. After the clash between the two fizzled down, the court begins to question if John is working with the devil. John stupidly claims he works for the devil to end all the madness of saving his wife’s life. John Proctor, Sarah Good, and Rebecca Nurse are sentenced to hang for the accusations of witchcraft soon after John is arrested. Reverend Hale tries to convince him to save himself and destroy the family name in return to be with his family. John does not want to, but Elizabeth comes to see him the day before he is supposed to be hung by the neck. later after that Abigail visits John to convince him to run off with her and escape death.
