Wooden footwear has been part of tradition in many countries of Europe and Asia for over 8 centuries. After the world war II every village of Netherland was having its own shoe maker because Leather shoe was became scare so wooden shoe became popular as relatively cheaper alternative. But it doesn't stayed any longer, now wooden shoes are merely seen anywhere.4(Reference)
Leather is a most often natural material used for making shoes. The types of leather used are: pig skin, cow skin, calf leather, reptile leather, goat leather, horse leather. Since it is soft, breathable and adopts feet shape very well.8(Reference) Leather is (usually) made from cows and sometimes out of exotic skins like ostrich, stingray and crocodile hides . Countries such as China often use dog or cat skin for leather. Making a leather shoe is a complicated process which need energy, water and resource-intensive, typically with highly toxic chemicals which is used in almost every step.9(Reference)
Now the designers are manifesting upon consumer demand for cruelty-free, eco friendly and sustainable products made with no animal skins at all. There are some manufactures and designers still present who are giving a contemporary style and promoting wooden shoe as a most sustainable and eco friendly substitute for leather.

ORIGIN
The origin of wooden footwear is not known yet. But many evidence have founded through Europe and Asia, the different historical traditions gives a different shapes and name to them.

Leathers has been a good material type to be used for shoe but do we really need it? A good design concept combine with renewable material such as wood will not only decrease the cost but also it will decrease the leather production in which a lot of animal are been butchered as well as, the use of toxic chemicals which latterly get mixed with wastage.
Wooden footwear is not a new concept to be applied as daily base footwear as it has been into our tradition. Promotion of ethical designs by the ethical designer will helps us to regenerate our roots with nature and tradition both.
