Phanibhargav Vasireddy Psychology 102 c2 Using the Habituation Technique to Evaluate a Piagetian Hypothesis The purpose of this paper is to use the habituation technique in young infants to evaluate one hypothesis derived from Piaget’s theory of cognitive development. I will compare 5-months olds in a task that involves possible and impossible outcomes. Piaget’s theory specifies the cognitive competencies of children of this age. 1a. The way that children see the world while they are in the sensorimotor stage, is by touching put stuff in their mouth smelling different things and playing with other things teaches the kids a lot in a very small …show more content…

The object permanence emerges at an age of 2 because they start to remember a lot more, now they start recognizing things and people. 1c. Stranger Anxiety is the babies cry when the people that they don’t recognize hold them or get close to them because they are not used to them, mostly happens when the baby is mostly around its parents and some new person comes to the house baby cries. The stranger anxiety develops around 10 months. Object permanence and stranger anxiety might emerge together is that because you have to remember that just because you can’t see or hear it or you don’t know it doesn’t mean it isn’t or never was there in the first place. 1d. Wynn and McCrink believe that babies can add and subtract and think about mathematical problems as young as 5 months old, they say that these babies can recognize moving things and simple dots. But Piaget doesn’t agree because he says that 18 month old babies start to emerge Object …show more content…

2a. Habituation technique is a process where babies learn to slow down their reaction to things when it shown to them repeatedly over time. Habituation is a slower response to repeated impulse. Dishabituation is a fast reaction to a repeated impulse. Habituation helps researchers to see if babies has object permanence because they react slow to a thing that they saw many times, this way the researchers can see if the babies can remember what they saw something for a short period of time. 2b.Another way you can test the cognitive capacity of the infants by showing them all of the different alphabet letter, each for the same amount of time and after everything you place the alphabets and see how many they pick out, this shows us how much they can remember by the shape of the letters. 2c. The advantages of using the Habituation technique than using the alternative technique helps identify how long they take to identify and how is their reaction time, the habituation technique is key because it is easy for the babies and for the scientists to monitor the progress of the
