Case #3 Kyle’s case has many factors that may be significant: His parents’ divorce is still recent, starting middle school, puberty, family environment, etc. There is also a lot of information that is lacking to help me to understand what is needed. There is no information about his school performance, the domestic violence that took place, family relationships, social relationships, or even his interests. Kyle’s grandmother wants me to report to the judge that he is doing well in school. I have no information about is school performance. His teachers are my colleagues. The vignette indicates that he wants to move back in with his dad. If this is one of his goals it can create some interesting ethical conflicts. Social workers support the client’s right to decide for themselves and pursue a course of action. They also have a commitment to the client. This commitment to the client means that the social worker should be promoting the well-being of the client (National Association of Social Workers, 1999). If Kyle moves back in with his dad this may become a very negative thing in his life. His older brother has been struggling in school because he has to help support his dad. If Kyle moves in he may experience similar struggles in school. As Kyle’s social worker I would help him to see his options and both the positive and negative consequences for his options. If he chooses an option that is detrimental to his well-being we can have a conversation about that. Also, in this initial meeting I will be able to get some answers to the unanswered questions. These answers will shape how the course of therapy and the plan for Kyle. I think that family therapy will help. In my experience, no one is perfect and there is always room for improvement. Social workers value competence and so do I (National Association of Social Workers, 1999). I have a bachelor’s degree, several years of experience working and volunteering in human-service fields, and some life experience, but that does not make me qualified to be able to give Kyle what he needs or figure out how to best serve him. I need more experience and education to be able to come up with a solid plan. Right now, I am not competent enough to be his social worker. If I was thrust in this situation today, and I wasn’t able to refer him to someone who was actually qualified, I would be collaborating like mad with the experts that I know that would be able to give me the guidance I would need to be able to serve this boy.
