For being a successful , effective counselor one must possess essential skills. You can specialize in number of fields of counseling. Specially when you are a school counselor it is the most difficult task. School counselors mostly have a very less time to deal with numerous students. At times they have to interact with the parents of the students or the respective professors of the student. This profession is considered as one of the most rewarding one. Being a counselor, maximum of your time would be spent in listening and further processing the information given by the students, parents or other faculties. First patiently try to listen first and later ask questions. Being a good listener is one of the crucial skills for a school counselor to possess. Having good communication skills is much needed for this profession. As you need to express your ideas, thoughts and opinions orally. Making the student or parent understand your advice or suggestion is a vital task.

2. Ability to provide a judgment

Counselor's job is making perfect decisions and providing accurate guidance to the students for preparing them for surviving in the competitive world. Considering the area of interest of the high school students, suggesting them which making the choices of college, and help them with selecting the suitable stream.
