Do you not wish you could play a sport for a couple more years after high school? That contingency would be an opportunity most students would love to enjoy. “Playing college sports is about getting to play the game you have an unexplainable obsession with for four more years. And that is a privilege, not an occupation” (Murphy, 2). Many people think these athletes should get money for all the work they put into these sports, but there are many reasons against this opinion. Although the argument is that athletes at a collegiate level do not have as much time to work for extra money like other college students, college athletes should not be paid for choosing to play a college sport. This education, worth anywhere from $75,000 to $200,000, should be the only benefit the athletes want. They are not having to pay this money for their schooling because of the scholarships they receive. $6,993,766 from the athletic department at the University of Texas goes toward tuition and student fees alone (College, 1). Money for team travel, apparel, and meals that are not included in this total is also paid for by the team under these scholarships. This is just a bonus that other college students do not receive (Editorial, 2).
A normal full time student attending a university would be paying thousands of dollars a year on their tuition. College athletes are getting their education at these universities paid for them. The average cost of tuition for state residents at a public college for the 2013-2014 school year was $8,893.
