Every single individual has once heard the words “get good grades, go to a good college and graduate, in order to get a good job and succeed in life.” However, no one can really assure that a student with a degree is going to have a better future than those who do not attend college. Lawrence B. Schlack, a retired superintendent, asserts in his article “Not Going to College is a Viable Option” that college is not the only place to go after graduating from high school. By using different kinds of persuasive techniques the author effectively supports his claim and makes the article an understandable and important tool for both parents and students who believe that college is their mandatory option after high school.
I was raised in an encouraging household where both of my parents greatly valued education. Although they were high school graduates, neither could afford to attend college; a combination of family and financial woes ultimately halted their path. As a result, my parents frequently reminded me that getting a good education meant better opportunities for my future. To my parents, that seemed to be the overarching goal: a better life for me than the one they had. My parents wanted me to excel and supported me financially and emotionally of which the former was something their parents were not able to provide. Their desire to facilitate a change in my destiny is one of many essential events that contributed to my world view.
They tied education to success and my dad always voiced that he desired better for me than he had for himself, even though he became quite successful despite not having a high school diploma. One of the biggest benefits of attending college is the real world experience you gain from being there and living partially on your own. For most people, college is a time where you can gain experience living with new responsibilities that you don’t have at home, without the pressure of having to pay bills on time
As being a high school junior it is coming time to choose what I want to do with the rest of my life. My dream college is Berklee College of Music. It is located in Boston Massachusetts, and when telling my parents about Berklee they completely thought I was crazy to even consider to go out-of-state. Well many parents believe that going out-of-state is not the best idea for their child. Parents believe that going out-of-state is too expensive, that their child is not ready to live on their own, that it will be too stressful, etc. but that is not the case. Going to college out-of-state is actually beneficial as the student will learn responsibility, experience a new lifestyle, see more options for their academics, and much more.
Education has always been a primary concern for my parents, who taught me that if I need to succeed in life, I have to be educated. The school district I came from was nonaccredited at the time and did not prepare me to be well equipped in high school. I knew that coming from one of the worst public school districts in Kansas City to going to one of the top private high school schools in Missouri, would not be easy and I was up for the challenge. As I look back on my life, I can truly say that I am grateful for the opportunity to start again. My family flied our war and politically torn country of Eritrea four years ago, seeking shelter here. Through my parent's struggles to build a better life for all of us, I have gained a deep appreciation for hard work and dedication which I applied to my education to achieve my dreams.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
