My interest in Georgetown and my personal goals are best explained as the levels of an inverted triangle. On the first level, my broadest goal is to attend a well-respected university in a major U.S. city. The culture and opportunities in Washington D.C. are important to me as an enhancement of my college experience. The second level is study at a Catholic university. I come from a strong Catholic tradition and I believe the influence of Catholicism at Georgetown will increase my sense of belonging on campus. The third level is attending a school with a commitment to NCAA athletics. College sports teams rally school spirit like nothing else can. I think it it would be really fun to attend a school that goes crazy during March Madness. The fourth level of specificity is the opportunity to study abroad in Italy such as Villa Le Balze. My maternal grandparents were Italian immigrants. I feel very comfortable in Italy but I do not speak the language. The fifth level is occupied by the quality of the faculty in the science programs. The faculty are award winning not just for their research but for their teaching skills. This is unfortunately somewhat rare in our nation’s top academic institutions. Many professors teach as a requirement of their department but teaching is not their focus or their passion and it shows in the classes they oversee. From what I’ve researched, Georgetown’s biology professors are as interested in teaching their students as in pursuing their research. In high school, my favorite class was AP U.S. History, not because I love the humanities but because my teacher was engaged, interested and committed to his subject.
