During these past few years, I have felt like I am a violation of society because of who I am. Because of my skin color, my hair, the way I dress and talk. Society tells us to be ourselves and to be unique, but the pressure of fitting into the cookie cutter norm is overbearing. It is the ideal that everyone needs to fit into this mold that consists of the standards of society when we are all different people. When I act like myself, society tells me I’m violating the norm. When I’m following the norm, they tell me I’m plain, but at least it’s better than being yourself. I believe that dominant groups have a different perspective on the world. When I return back to the scene of the White neighborhood at a distanced standpoint, it seems almost picturesque. I don’t think about what is normal and what isn’t because in a way, I feel that we take “normal” and internalize the oppression that the dominant society forces upon us, thereby leaving a sense of inadequacy for granted. We accept it as what is suitable and fair even if it might not be as if we have been blinded. Going back to the scene, it is satisfactory and perfect the way it is. When I add myself back into the story, that is when the picturesque and social norms are disrupted. The scene is no longer “normal” because I am the odd one out. That is when people only begin to see that there is a barrier between what is considered normal and what is considered abnormal. The norms of our culture were invisible until they were violated by me. Last year, I went on a school trip to Italy. The group being a majority of Chinese students, we were harassed by the Italian citizens throughout the trip. This is due to the fact that the Italians assumed that we were lower class Chinese tourists even after we had informed them that we were students from America and had demonstrated our proficiency in English. Because of this assumption, we were treated differently. They refused to take us in, in fear that we would steal or cheat. They presumed we were cheap and wouldn’t pay our
