What would you do for freedom? For the Vietnamese people after the Vietnam war it meant risking everything casting off into open waters and hoping there was safety on the other side. After the Vietnam war, numerous supporters of the U.N. had to flee Vietnam and surrounding areas in fear for their lives from the communist that had just gained control of their country. For most the only way to escape was by fishing boat they would be compelled to take on dangerous and, for countless, fatal waters in hopes to make it to a friendly country of asylum. These are people that had little, but it was necessary to risk everything in hopes of survival and a better future. Boat people, this was the term that was used in refugees after the Vietnam war (Vietnamese Boat People). Many refugees got so desperate that they purposely sunk there boats offshore so that they could not be turned away or put back out to see (Vietnamese Boat People). Nevertheless countries like Malaysia and Thailand took in refugees and had fully functioning refugee camps set up (Vietnamese Boat People). For some they settled in these countries permanently and other sought and found asylum in Europe, the U.S., or Australia (Vietnamese Boat People). These brave refugees risked all they had for the chance of a better life and happiness. They were running from a country that wanted them dead to, navigating traitorous seas all in hope to find a place there could be safe and call home.
