The decade of the 1970s impacted the United States and left the economy in ruins. The stock market was a mess and people didn’t really want to have anything to do with stocks. The stock market lost about forty percent over a period of 18 months, that is a large sum considering how much money goes into them. Furthermore, in the Energy Crisis & Economic Collapse, the United States had to pay twelve dollars for a barrel of oil instead of the usual of eight. On the other hand, the impact happened through famous people, even through music and fashion. The 1970s hold people like John Travolta and three of the United States presidents: Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and James Carter. The 1970s was also the decade where punk rock and disco was made. Some of the fashion was even affected by the music styles. Everything that happened in the 1970s still holds an effect on us today, especially the economy.
There are many events in the 1970s and every single one affects us still today. The year of 1972 was when Nixon’s Foreign Policy and the Munich Massacre took place. Nixon’s Foreign Policy made Richard Nixon the first president to visit China. This is partially what made him known today because it helped the United States. It was also “opened the communist nation to American trade and reopened diplomatic relations.” This made the United States get more money because China would buy a lot of United States products. It also made the Soviet Union isolated and as an aftermath they began to bargain with the United States, both sides progressing. At the end, both sides entered agreement and “peaceful coexistence know as Détente.” In short, gaining trade and creating peace was the major effect of the Nixon’s Foreign Policy. In conclusion, the people, the events, the music, and the fashion in the 1970s affected the present. The 1970s was a period of change and growth, it was even the period of sadness. The economy was in a poor condition and Elvis Presley died. Furthermore, the split up of the Beatles made the period even sadder than before. Well we all grow and expand, but no matter how much we do grow we will mess up and it is just up to us to rebuild. Gerald Ford had to try to fix the earlier problems but he didn’t fix all of them. If we didn’t have the 1970s, we wouldn’t have been where we are now.
