Suicide is the act of killing yourself because you do not want to continue living. It is done voluntarily and intentionally. It’s becoming a major global public health issue with almost 1 million people committing suicide each year (Suicide Data, 2010a). Suicide is a serious mental health problem affecting the lives of young adults. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages of 15 and 24. School: - Teachers play an active role in suicide prevention of young adults by fostering the emotional well being of all students. Teachers have day to day contact with many young people, some of whom have problems that could lead to suicide. Teachers can reach out to student and ask how she or he is doing. Teachers should mention changes they have noticed in student’s behavior. III. Peer Group: - “Relationships with friends play a vital role in whether teenage girls think about suicide, but have little impact on suicidal thoughts among boys”, according to a new nationwide study. The research found that girls were nearly twice as likely to think about suicide if they had only a few friends. Girls were also more likely to consider suicide if their friends were not friends with each other. IV. Policies: - Establishing suicide prevention policies directly improves young adults physical and physiological safety. These deaths are usually occurred by intoxication of hypnotic drugs. Hypnotic drugs are commonly known as sleeping pills whose primary function is to induce sleep and used in the treatment of insomnia. (Hypnotic). But, these days, hypnotic drugs are used illegally by college students. Students consume these drugs for committing suicide. These drugs are sold as the Over the Counters (OTC) drugs in some pharmacies. Establishing new policies and laws in college campus that require prescription for purchasing these hypnotic drugs can lead to drastic decrease in suicide rate.
