Teen suicide is an enormous social issue that we encounter constantly. Every day a child perishes; not just from injuries, or illnesses, but by their own hand. Teenagers make the decision to take their lives by creating a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Reasoning for suicide varies, for every teenager is different. To help battle the increase of suicides within our country, and even throughout the world, we must understand risk factors, acknowledge the warning signs and its impacts, and finally become familiar with the resources available around us.
For centuries suicide has been considered an act against God, a violation of law, and a stain on the community. Since the year of 1999 people around the globe have killed themselves more than the year previous. Throughout the developed world, self-harm is now the leading cause of death for people 15 to 49, surpassing all cancers and heart disease. That’s a dizzying change, a discovery that shows just how effective people throughout the world are at fighting disease, and just how haunted everyone remains at the same time. Around the globe, in 2010, self-harm took more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined, stealing more than 36 million years of healthy life across all ages. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) teenagers in America 4,600 aged 15 to 24 committed suicide.The older the youth is the higher the percentages. For youth aged 15 to 19, 7.8 per 100,000 died, while for youth aged 10 to 14, 1.3 per 100,000 died. Although rates differ between countries, suicide is the third most common cause of death among young children surpassed by homicides and accidents ("Teen Suicide is Preventable"). Depression has an extremely negative impact on the person who has it and those surrounding him/her. Teens are more likely to stay around their peers, who may have the same situations, rather than encounter their own families (Belliner 65). Depression is a shift in mood where one becomes unhappy with their life for an amount of time,short or long. The thing about depression is that it is not always recognizable. A teen might play it off as if nothing were happening and carry on with their life. Even though it is not noticed among many there are numerous warning signs to watch for.
