The Stonehenge Research Report There are many wonders of the world. There is the Great Wall of China, the Coliseum, the Hagia Sophia, the Taj Mahal, and many other places across the globe that has struck wonder into the world. Yet there is a place that not even the smartest of scholars cannot seem to understand. On a grassy piece of land in England there are heavy stones that stand tall, placed side-by-side and some even lay upon one another. It is known as the Stonehenge. Many people have heard of it, and many people have theories of why these stones are standing there today. Yet no one seems to know the exact purpose of this monument. There are many other scholars who have theories about the Stonehenge being used for religious purposes as well. My theory is that the purpose of the Stonehenge for religious and ritualistic. When you begin to wonder why the Stonehenge exists you have to think back hundreds of years into the past, all the way back to 3,100 B.C. (Palmer, Veronica). That is when the first stage of construction began. Some of the tools used to create the Stonehenge include the bones of animals. “They used primitive tools, often made from deer antlers.”- History.com Staff. They were used to dig ditches on the site of what would become the Stonehenge. When a team of archeologists were excavating at the Stonehenge they discovered that over fifty individuals had been buried there around that time of construction. This supports the fact that the Stonehenge could have been used for religious purposes and ritualistic purposes. Scientists believe several tribes helped to construct the Stonehenge. Over time more tools that were used during the construction of the Stonehenge were excavated, and the more recent ... ... middle of paper ... ... fact that can prove that my thesis is correct. Another fact would be that festivals were held there, not just the ones in the twentieth century, but festivals that were held hundreds of years ago when the Stonehenge was fairly new to the world. A lot of time was spent into the construction of the Stonehenge; it was as if tribes would not give up on it. Over time it was reconstructed, stones were removed and added, and new people would take over the site. Those are my reasons why I believe the Stonehenge was used for religious and ritualistic purposes. The facts that you have read about in my essay (I believe) help prove my thesis to be true, and support my opinion. With the knowledge that we currently have available to us, I believe it can be quite simple to come to the conclusion that the purpose of the Stonehenge was for religious and ritualistic purposes.
