Robots and Humanity: Should We Be Worried? Robots are slowly going to become our friends, workers, and maybe even our lovers. At least that is what we hear and think. Some people might be wondering, “Why would I want a robot as a lover? Am I going to be able to sit down all the time and take a rest while my robot does everything for me?” Many questions like these are going through our minds, and as technology evolves, we will have more questions in the future. The thing we most focus on now is how robots are going to make our lives easier. However, future generations might have some second thoughts about trusting robotic minds that do not think or understand like humans’ minds do. Robots could be very dangerous and risky; many situations have Children these days rely on robotic machines more and more. In some cases, parents might be allergic to animals while their child wants a pet and they end up buying a robotic pet. These robotic pets do not think and have feelings like real pets do. Therefore, children would not feel the same connection with a robotic pet and they would not have the same affection and the relationship as with a real one. At least that is what we thought before the robotic invention. However, scientists nowadays would say robots could fill in for real pets and children can have those connections with them. Moreover, as is shown in the Live Science article titled “Human-Robot Relations: Why We Should Worry” by Clara Moskowitz, scientists have invented friends for older people. These robots can talk to them and make them feel comfortable. One of many is a robot called Paro. A robotic baby that was created to help the older people that are struggling with misery and insanity (Moskowitz). Elders would be able to feel the love and not be alone since they have these robots to talk to and even serve them with the things they need. Robots have had a major positive impact in these people’s lives which resulted in happier The safety issue is what concerns many buys the most. By getting a robot and making it complete your chores, you are given full access of your personal life to this robot. “Robots have a specific job to do that is ordered by their operator, and if the robot malfunctions, this could cause chaos” (Cortland Suny 4). If anything goes wrong, it would be an enormous disaster. Robots do not respond to emergencies and accidents like human beings do. In the video, the manager of the nursing home featured admitted that the family members of some of the elderly were disconcerted to see that their loved one believed that their robot companion was real. People love to read stories and watch movies of a science-fictional society that include robots with artificial intelligence. People are intrigued with the ability of the robots that seem to demonstrate what we humans consider morality. Eando Binder’s and Isaac Asimov’s short stories, as well as the 2004 Hollywood movie, all carry the title “I, Robot” and introduce possible futuristic worlds where robots are created and integrated within society. These stories challenge our perceptions about robots themselves, and could perhaps become an everyday commodity, or even valued assistants to human society. The different generations of “I, Robot” seem to set out the principles of robot behavior and showcase robots to people in both different and similar ways. How does the Robot view itself? More importantly, how does society judge these creations? The concepts discussed in these three stories covers almost 75 years of storytelling. Why has this theme stayed so relevant for so long?
The novel, Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other (2011) written by Sherry Turkle, presents many controversial views, and demonstrating numerous examples of how technology is replacing complex pieces and relationships in our life. The book is slightly divided into two parts with the first focused on social robots and their relationships with people. The second half is much different, focusing on the online world and it’s presence in society. Overall, Turkle makes many personally agreeable and disagreeable points in the book that bring it together as a whole.
From my perspective, what really causes these concerns is people’s over-independence on these robots. We tend to think that robots are intelligent and efficient enough that can replace our own mankind, making us too anxious to transfer the important work to the robots, and to accept and serve at a subordinate position. And this situation is really easy to happen. For myself, if something or someone can help me deal with my work, I will be so delighted to give away my work. This may also cause people hard to concentrate and start to lose their abilities since there is no need for people to do it themselves. This may lead to the results above and we will have nothing to do about it ultimately because it is we that first give the initiative to the robots. It is we that let them do so and at that time, we will have no strength to fight against these robots. So if we can avoid being over-independence on the robots, this will be less concerned.
In contrast, with the previous three articles which embody the development of robots as a useful tool for human growth, Headrick focus on the ethic and legal conflicts that will arise with the growth of robots. The creation of artificial intelligence in human lives will bring many unique situations. Headrick begins his article with an analogy of a driverless car in a parking lot. The car is programmed to go straight so it may not see certain things and react as quickly or effectively, to insure no lives are harmed. If a human were behind the wheel these situation would be unlikely to occur. With the spread of autonomous systems is it really beneficial to put the safety of humans in the hands of robots. Will our laziness to make our lives easier with lifeless objects jeopardized our existence. Headrick uses multiple Headrick points out real life situations where robots have jeopardized human livelihood. “The more we task robotics to act on our behalf," "one of the first questions is, 'who is responsible' in the moment of truth.… we don't have an answer for that yet” (Headrick 1). Robots have been widely viewed and seen as “the future.” Although they can definitely have their downfalls, robots can change the world as we know it. Providing care for the elderly and sick is just one possibility. Imagining a world filled with robots can be scary, but realizing the potential that can come with that is exciting. Instead, technology is continuously used and the users are so distracted that they do not see any harm being done. Technology is always updating and producing new things, the reason for this is because technology is not perfect. So this means that there is always room for change and improvement. There are still flaws in technology, including things such as printers jamming, internet crashing, and phone calls dropping. Why is it that, even with all of these flaws, people still turn to technology excessively? Turkle talks about people having the desire to have a robotic relationship in place of a real human relationship. She discusses a girl who wanted to “trade in her boyfriend ‘for a sophisticated Japanese robot’ if the robot would produce what she called ‘caring behavior’... She was looking for a ‘no-risk relationship’ that would stave off loneliness.” (Turkle 269-270) This may make you question, the same way that technological devices always need improvement, won’t the robots need improvement at one point. The robot may make a mistake or even be missing the new and improved characteristics of a human being. These characteristics can include the ability to have a meaningful conversation rather than a conversation limited to a scripted vocabulary. It is not ethical to replace human employees with robotic automation and computer-controlled systems. It is important to be mindful, how and when to use robotic automation as robotic automation is useful, when used sparsely. Robots are a problem for humans because, the technology of robots is becoming smarter, more reliable industrial robots and drones that lead to better factory production. It is often cheaper to buy an industrial robot or program than to train a human worker and pay them for their job. The major cost difference of robotic automation is often a major factor in why human jobs are replaced by robots, as with salary and overall price per employ.
To love is to experience the interactions of emotions between two beings. Artificial intelligence beings lack the capability to love; they cannot feel, as humans cannot program emotions into their software. Many argue that artificial intelligence respond in a manner similar to that of humans, resulting in a spark of love from the subsequent conversations. However, these responses are merely chosen from a predetermined databank. Therefore, the love felt by the human and machine cannot be considered real love. “Love, as you’ll see, is not lasting” (Fredrickson 108), it must be renewed to further the continuation of relationships, and thus, emotionless AIs cannot make strides towards the betterment of their relationship with a human being. This oversteps the ethical boundaries regarding love because technology is essentially consuming the love lives of others. Those who are romantically involved with machines lose the ability to create and maintain relationships with other human beings, as they are being conditioned to believe love between a machine and a human is more worthwhile. As a result of the lack of connections between technophiles and the rest of humanity, many technophiles turn to artificial intelligence since they are more convenient, easier to interact with, and generate less painful experiences. Robots are over-taking us. Or are being taken over by robots? There have been many robots developed to make life easier. Robotics has had some positive effects in the performance of certain jobs. It can help us complete difficult jobs that use materials that are not safe for humans to handle such as radioactive materials. A single robot can do heavy tasks that would require 10 people to complete. However, this savings in time and money for companies could result in loss of hours and wages for employees.
