Patient counseling may be defined as an interaction between a pharmacist and a patient. It is a one to one interactive session, which should include the teach-back method, which is a way to ensure patient understanding. Patient counseling is a very fundamental course, especially for a pharmacy student. As a healthcare professional, counseling patients is very essential in order for patients to adequately take their medications properly, reduce adverse side effects and prevent drug interactions. In the course of the semester, I was required to complete weekly assignments, I had two mock counseling sessions, I also had to do a medication raid cabinet assignment, and I was placed in a group to also complete certain assignments. …show more content…
Also, I had to work in a group with five other students and we had to go to the pharmacy and check prices and more information on various home testing kits such as blood glucose monitor, A1c test, cholesterol monitoring system, HIV test, DNA paternity test, screening kit for vaginal infections, home drug test, ovulation predictor and pregnancy test and baby milkscreen home test. The assignments were very useful and prepared me effectively for the mock patient …show more content…
It is an interactive session, which should include the teach-back method, which is a way to ensure patient understanding. The class provided me with an opportunity to combine my knowledge obtained in my other classes to be able to counsel a patient effectively and confidently. The course helped me to learn more about medications, proper medication disposal, helped me gained confidence to talk to patients about their
What went well during my clinical day was that this was the first time that I was treated very well by the nurse. This nurse was really good about sharing what she was passionate about, so this encouraged me to want to learn more about what she was teaching me. The best part of my day was patient and parent interaction. I went into two patient’s rooms and played games with them or colored with them. It brightened up my day seeing them laugh despite the health issues they had going on.
It is important to evaluate which learning style your patients prefer in order for them to best understand what needs to be done for the maximum appropriate outcome. Licensed practical nurses are advocates and that’s someone who supports and supplies information to their patients. Advocacy often involves standing up in support of a patient and their rights. This is especially true when patients are not able to protect their own rights. When filling the role of counselor, Licensed Practical Nurses can help patients and families explore ideas and feelings towards healthcare and illness (8 Roles of the LPN). Some patients have a difficult time accepting a disease or its treatment options. As a practical nurse you consult with RN supervisors regarding patient care and assessments. In some settings LPN 's communicate directly to physicians. Communicating information to the proper people assists in increasing the effectiveness of care plans (Role). As practical nurses we are only one part of a patient care team. Other important members include RN 's, CNA 's, physicians, physical/occupational/speech therapists, dietitians, volunteers, and more (8 Roles of the LPN). With such a large team, every member has their own scope of
Psychiatry is a medical field that deals with the diagnoses, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. The FDA is constantly approving drugs for psychiatrists to use that are supposed to help with in their practice. For example, Michael Levin-Epstein, who wrote the article “A New Way to Deliver Psychiatric Meds: Drugs for ADHD and Major Depression Now Can Be Delivered with Skin Patches,” shows how pharmacotherapy is continually being advanced by new ideas and approaches. However, Psychiatric drugs are not always the answer. Prescriptions are not a good remedy when it comes to the overcoming of a mental illnesses, because there is not enough information regarding the effects of the drugs, pharmaceutical companies are driven by profits,

Health is a complex concept, and when we talk about health we refer to body health and to the health of the mind, the health of relationships between us and those around us, the spiritual health. Looking online on one of the additional resources recommended, www.nimh.nih.gov, I have noticed that one of the symptoms of most diseases that affect a person's mental health is lack of sleep. Lack of sleep not only worsens man's mental health, but also causes serious imbalances in metabolism, immunity, general mood, and last but not least, affects the ability of learning and memorizing among students. The sleep fulfills a number of vital functions for both our mind and body. We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, which is a valuable and useful
As I began to read Davis and Meier's (2011) The Elements of Counseling, I was immediately intrigued by the title of Chapter Five, “Counselor, Know Thyself”. In the title, I made intuitive connections with many important concepts imbedded in Philosophy. As an example, In Plato’s Phaedrus (2003), the master protagonist, Socrates, explains to Phaedrus that he has no time to explain trivial things, “…and the reason, my friend, is this: I am not yet able as the Delphic inscription has it, to know myself; so it seems to me ridiculous, when I do not yet know that, to investigate irrelevant things.” As I reflect on the handout Competencies in Professional Counseling and Related Human
Values, Morals, and Beliefs are components that play a role in an individual’s self-identity. The establishment of these components shape human nature, behavior, and the development of an individual’s purpose. The basis of these fundamentals has contributed to my desire to become a counselor. This paper will discuss my views of human nature, factors of behavior changes, goals of therapy, the roles of a therapist, and the counseling approaches that I chose to incorporate in a practice.
During March 2016, in Stage 1 of the pharmacy degree, I attended a two day work placement in a community pharmacy as part of the Work Based Learning module within the Capability unit. The purpose of Work Based Learning is to increase engagement with learning and to develop skills specific to patient pathways. This will link to Stage 4 of the MPharm course in which the main unit is Patient Centred Care. Therefore, it is imperative that I enhance my patient education skills through my own education.
There is this saying, “Everything happens for a reason” and I believe certain things do. I believe that everything I have gone through my life has been preparing me for the beginning of a great career. This world can be a scary place, but there is also beauty in this world with lots of opportunities, and people who want to help make a difference. I want to be one of those people who inspire others to do better, to guide them and to teach them to not give up. If it was not for my counselors and mentors I would not be where I am at today. I was able to accomplish one of my goals of being the first in my family to graduate with my Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from CSULA. I want to further my education to better myself, and help others along the way.
Mental health is an integral part of our overall health and daily to day activities. According to WHO (World Health Organization), mental health is "a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community". on the contrary, one may experience a significant distress, disability and psychological dysfunction unable to function daily routine activities when mental illness or mental disorder is imminent. although mental disorders have been associated with the the impact on one’s health and wellbeing, it is also have a considerable economic burden when assessed in terms of unemployment
When it comes to mental illnesses people tend to assume the worst of the patients, what they don’t think about is the people who care for them. They don’t care what really goes on behind the walls of the facilities. The patients were treated like animals, and horrendous punishments were appointed whenever someone missbehaved. Instead of helping the patients with their mental health, the doctors and nurses were making the patients feel worse. Recovery was on the low percentage and thirty-eight percent of the patients in mental hospitals in the 1800s were reported dead. If we were to compare the time periods of 1600s-1800s and 2000s the differentiality would be beyond extremity.
The field of mental health care in the United States is relatively new and has changed dramatically over the years. It was once believed that mental illness was the result of being possessed by a demonic spirit. We now know that psychopathologies are the result of a mixture of many things including abnormalities of chemicals in the brain plus the influences of our environment and daily experiences. We may never fully understand how the mind works. It has been a challenge determining the most appropriate and most effective way to treat people with mental illness. This has resulted in the mental health care system making many mistakes and wrong judgements in its development. The issue of care for the mentally ill is a very important one since according to the National Institute of Mental Health, “An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.” (“Numbers Count”, n.d) As professionals learn more about the brain and the mentally ill, the care will continue to progress and improve.
Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in North America and Europe in every community costing the U.S. over half a trillion dollars per year. Mental health is defined as the emotional and social wellbeing and psychological resources for dealing with the day-to-day problems of life. Mental illness is the term describing all mental disorders. Mental disorders are health conditions that are identified by changes in thinking and behavior. Mental disorders as well as mental impairment can occur from postnatal exposure to physical, chemical, and biological agents, like secondhand cigarette smoke. Brain function impairment can be caused by trauma, such as a car crash or bullet wound, or by disease, such as syphilis, cancer, or stroke. Maladaptive family functioning (such as having a parent with mental illness, or substance abuse problem) poverty, experiencing violence, physical or sexual abuse, or neglect can also lead to mental illness. Growing up in neighborhoods marked by social division leads to discrimination, and social hardship adds to the risk.
Psychiatry has been a science and study, of and for, the treatment of mental illness. Since the 1900s, a cultural and social stigma has solidified the fear of men and women who have been touched by the unpleasant management of the treatment of those with these illnesses. The way we teach the individuals how to cope with and care for the loved ones that have a mental illness, seems to have fallen short of the way we show those how to care for loved ones with diabetes or heart disease. The average person’s response when they are frightened by something in the twenty-first century is that all answers can now be found on the world wide web. Unfortunately, the web can be a source of misinformation, miscommunication, and all sorts of ludicrous opinions
One aspect I found striking was the role of advice giving in counseling. Prior to this class, I knew that counselors did not typically give opinions or advice to lead a client in a certain direction. What I did not know was the entire reasoning behind this. A counselor might avoid giving advice so that a client learns to make his/her own decisions, does not become dependent on the counselor, and to ensure that a client will not later blame the counselor if the counselor’s advice did not turn out well. In this context, I have a better appreciation and understanding of why therapists refrain from telling the client what to do.
