Heart Murmur is an extra or unusual sound heard during a heartbeat, murmurs range from very faint to very loud. Sometimes they make a swishing or wooshing noise.There are two types of heart murmurs, innocent (harmless) and abnormal. Most murmurs dont mean anything is wrong but sometimes they are a sign that there might be a problem with the heart. Normal heartbeats go dub dub a heart murmur makes a dub swoosh dub.
Murmurs can be classifief by 7 different characteristics.
• Timing it refers to if the heart murmur is systolic (medicine) or diastolic (diastole)
• Shape refers the intensity over time
• Location There are 4 places on the anterior chest wall to listen for the murmur.
* Aortic Region -The 2"d right
*Pulmonic Region- The 2"d left
*Tricuspid Region- The 5th left
*Mitra!Region- The 5th left mid clavicular
• Radiation The sound of the murmur radiates
• Intensity levels that refers to loudness to the murmur it ranges from 1-6
• Pitch it determines if the murmur is low medium or high
• Quality is characteristics of the murmur blowing rumbling or musical
A doctor can usually detect a heart murmur through a skethoscope. The whoosh is just a extra noise that the blood makses as it passes through the heart. Heart Murmurs are usually found in younger children and most of the time fix there selfs. They are caused by blood flowing through the healthy valves and do not require treatments. Heart murmurs can be caused by blood flowing damaged or unhealthy heart.

The movie “Audism Unveiled” was a very interesting and powerful movie. I never realized that deaf individuals are discriminated against. This could be partly because I have never been immersed in or educated about the deaf culture until this year. One of the things that struck me the most while watching “Audism Unveiled” was the many heart wrenching stories about children being unable to communicate with their own non-signing hearing families.. The deaf child would have to ask their family members, why everyone was laughing or what’s going on. The family members would just tell them “I’ll tell you later” or “Nevermind. It’s not important”, resulting in the individual feeling isolated. Personally, I agree with people saying that if a parent has a deaf child they should learn how to sign; communication is what brings families together. As a result, the most intriguing thing to me was the stories of family members never learning American Sign Language; leaving their family member isolated.
The most likely diagnosis for the cardiac murmur in this horse is aortic insufficiency, as a result of degenerative changes to the aortic valve. In aortic insufficiency, the murmur heard is due to regurgitation through the defective aortic valve. Aortic insufficiency presents clinically with a holodiastolic decrescendo murmur, with maximal intensity over the aortic valve7, as is heard in this case. Holodiastolic means that the murmur is occurring between the end of S2 and the beginning of S1. Decrescendo refers to a murmur that gradually declines during diastole, as the pressure gradient between aorta and left ventricle drops, as a result of run-off into the systemic circulation and the ventricle. The murmur is often musical or honking in nature7. This is a common finding in older horses4, and the most common acquired valve lesion7, usually of little clinical significance.
In this lab, I took two recordings of my heart using an electrocardiogram. An electrocardiogram, EKG pg. 628 Y and pg. 688 D, is a recording of the heart's electrical impulses, action potentials, going through the heart. The different phases of the EKG are referred to as waves; the P wave, QRS Complex, and the T wave. These waves each signify the different things that are occurring in the heart. Ebstein’s Anomaly is a rare congenital condition, present at birth, in which the tricuspid valve is malformed and the valve itself is not in the correct anatomic place (Mayo Clinic Staff). This condition can be treated various ways depending on “the type and frequency of arrhythmias, associated symptoms…, and the presence of structural heart disease” (Cleveland Clinic, 2014). Some patients may not need treatment at all, since they show not symptoms, since sometimes this condition can be naturally eliminated over the first year of life, but may still be required to have regular schedule appointments with the physician so the patients can be monitored. If symptoms are prevalent, the different treatment methods include a pacemaker, defibrillator, surgery, and medicine.
Everyone knows that the heart is a vital organ and we cannot live without it. It is complex and important; therefore it is critical to know how it works. With knowledge about the heart and what is good and bad for it, one can significantly decrease the risk for diseases. Now, the heart has three layers. Endocardium is the smooth inside lining, myocardium id is the middle layer of heart muscle, and it is surrounded by a fluid filled sac called the pericardium. The heart is split into four parts; some may call it chamber or rooms. These parts are the: right atrium, the left atrium, the right ventricle, and the left ventricle. The chambers are separated by partition walls known as the septum and each has a one-way valve that prevents blood from flowing backwards.
In general, ultrasound waves produced by an instrument called transducer are sent into a patient. Some of the waves are absorbed, but the other portion of these waves are reflected when tissue and organ boundaries are encountered. The echoes produced by the reflected waves are then picked up by the transducer and translated in a visible picture often referred to as ultrasound. In the paragraphs that follow, the physics of how the transducer functions, what the ultrasound waves do, and how the image is formed will be explained.

If we break down the word we can see “Cardio” which means of the heart, “myo” which means muscle, and “pathy” which means disease, therefore cardiomyopathies are diseases of the heart muscle. (Slide 3) There are 3 main types of cardiomyopathies; hypertrophic, dilated, and restrictive. I will only be discussing dilated cardiomyopathy, which is characterized by the enlargement of the hearts chambers with impaired systolic function. It is estimated that as many as 1 of 500 adults may have this condition. Dilated cardiomyopathy is more common in blacks than in whites and in males than in females. It is the most common form of cardiomyopathy in children and it can occur at any age (CDC).

Cardiac dysrhythmias come in different degrees of severity. There are heart conditions that you are able to live with and manage on a daily basis and those that require immediate attention. Atrial Fibrillation is one of the more frequently seen types of dysrhythmias (NIH, 2011). The best way to diagnosis a heart condition is by reading a cardiac strip (Ignatavicius &Workman, 2013). Cardiac strips play an chief part in the nursing world allowing the nurse and other trained medical professionals to interpret what the heart is doing. In a normal strip, one can clearly identify a P wave before every QRS complex, which is then followed by a T wave; in Atrial Fibrillation, the Sinoatrial node fires irregularly causing there to be no clear P wave and an irregular QRS complex (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013). Basically, it means that the atria, the upper chambers of the heart, are contracting too quickly and no clear P wave is identified because of this ‘fibrillation’ (Ignatavicius & Workman, 2013).
