On the contrary, the research conducted on male prostitutes focuses on power dynamics, and masculinity as it applies to sex work (Comte, 2013)
The research that has been done on male prostitutes states that compared to most female prostitution, male sex workers are well organized. A majority of these prostitutes associate with homosexual acts, which is seen as one of the biggest differences between the two sexes. It has also been hypothesized that in order to have a lucrative business in male prostitution, the man must be young, attractive, and desperate enough to engage in all forms of sexual acts. Apart from the information stated above nothing else ground breaking has surfaced from this aspect of literature review. Males are hypothesized to be more promiscuous, engage in early sexual acts, and more likely to test HIV positive (Caukins, 1973). Due to the fact that male prostitution is not as prevalent as female prostitution, it has not been accurately examined. There is not a significant amount of research; despite the fact that male prostitution has been identified in countries all around the world, and it has been found to be a well-established business.
Gap in Literature
Despite the immense amount of research there are many limitations. The limitations that affected this particular study were the lack of research representing the male prostitution population. Specifically, research focuses on women that have been arrested, jailed or have seeked any sort of therapeutic help. Moreover, to eliminate any possible researcher bias the agency coordinators will be given an overview of the study so they refer the children/youth to be chosen for this study. In addition to that the agency coordinators will not be aware that the study particularly deals with prostitution. They will be misinformed and told that this study will measure child victimization and their behavior into emerging adulthood. They will be given the task of choosing children regardless of race, gender, and class. The only exception will be that the proportion of the sexes must be equal, in order to accurately compare the difference between the sexes. The population chosen for this study will attempt to be as representative of the U.S population as possible.
