One of the most complicated concepts in life is the matter of relativity. It is nearly impossible to truly ‘step into another's shoes’ simply because that other person possesses a lifetime of information and experiences that someone else cannot hypothetically replicate. Most of the time that other individual can’t even remember half of their own life simply because it was made up of seemingly insignificant details. However, in an effort to be as objective as is humanly possible, I would say that Jeannette Walls and her siblings were in some ways luckier than her peers. She and her siblings largely experienced much of the same ‘adventure’ as her mother liked to call it. They even ended up in the same big city together. The three older siblings, Lori, Brian, and Jeannette herself, all lead successful lives. Her divorce and Brian’s may have been an after effect of their rearing, but for the most part, they were full fledged members of conventional society. As was Lori. Maureen, though, struggled later in life. She became exponentially dependant on others and then later on cigarettes and alcohol. It again has to do with relativity. Had I been raised as Jeannette had, identical circumstances and everything, I can confidently say that yes I would have agreed with her. How could I not have? The reason Walls thinks the way she does largely has to do with how she was raised. There are certainly parts that identify her as an individual (if that wasn’t the case then all siblings would be virtually identical in personality), but the thought that she was actually a fortunate child is so heavily influenced by her bringing-up that even if I ended up the exact opposite as her, I would still have thought the
