Lou Rawls once stated, “Music is the greatest communication in the world. Even if people don't understand the language that you're singing in, they still know good music when they hear it.” This quote explains how music plays a vital role in the world today because it has the ability to communicate to a large group of people about important issues. This gives music a lot of power because it is able to convey certain messages influencing a person's personality. Being surrounded by music for most of my life, I know that music has had a huge impact on my personality. I am constantly listening to music whether I am doing homework, driving a car, or exercising. Throughout my life, I have found a couple songs that I share a deep connection with.
Moving to Beatrice when I was fourteen was an event that had a huge impact on my life. My dad got a new job in Beatrice, and that meant I had to leave the life I had behind. This experience reminds me of the song “Sleep On The Floor” by The Lumineers because this song is all about picking your life up moving unexpectedly. The lyrics in the song that mean the most to me are “Pack yourself a toothbrush dear/Pack yourself a favorite blouse/Take a withdrawal slip/Take all of your savings out” because these lyrics explain how expectadilty people decide to move and for that reason how quick have to pack. I felt this same way when my parents told me we were moving because I felt like everything was moving very fast. We bought a house and next thing I knew we were packing up all our belongings. This song does a good job in the explaining how rushed I felt during the time of my life when I was moving to
I went through a hard time when I moved to Beatrice because I felt completely alone, yet surrounded by people everywhere. This loneliness is what lead to Josie and I became very good friends when we both moved to Beatrice. We bonded over the type of alternative indie music we listen to, and all our common interests. The song “I Love My Friends” by Foster the People represents how much I love being friends with Josie. This song is all about loving your friends no matter what they do. My favorite lyrics from the song are “But I love my friends, I love my friends/We've got each other, don't need no others” because I when I first moved here I thought I needed a lot of friends, but I was wrong. I only needed Josie because she became the only person I wanted to spend time with. Without Josie, I really do not know where I would be because she has had such a positive influence on my life. Music was able to bring Josie and I together in a period of
“Pocketful of Sunshine” by Natasha Bedingfield has always been a song that I felt like that defines me and my attitude. The lyric “Do what you want, but you're never gonna break me/ Sticks and stones are never gonna shake me” has a meaning full tug on my heart (Bedingfield). Ever since I was young I have had people tell me, not directly, that I wasn’t good enough and I was always beaten down. I have always tried to have this attitude. I would physically say “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, so this songs meaning surely hits home with me. Another thing that stands out about this song is its upbeat music that I absolutely adore. This upbeat music lets me release my inner goofiness, as for when I hear the song I cannot help but dance around and enjoy myself. This song also has a lyric stating “The sun is on my side/ Take me for a ride/ I smile up to the sky/ I know I'll be all right” (Bedingfield). This lyric pertains to me as well for I’m one to love being outside and having a good time. From this lyric I imagine some friends and myself just riding around with the top down and enjoying the presence of each other. My group of friends all have a free spirited souls and I’m so thrilled to have them around me.
This song talks a lot about the baggage of the past that people hold onto instead of letting it go. All that baggage is only going to end up hurting you more and more instead of helping you in any way possible. An example is the opening
The song I’ve chosen for this assignment is Old Friends by the band Pinegrove. This is a charming alt-rock song about remembering old connections, and holding on to the new ones. In the song singer Evan Stephens Hall realizes he doesn’t make enough time for the people he really cares about when a friend of his passes away. Although I may not be able to relate to the song completely, I can definitely relate to the overall message the band is trying to get across, specifically in a few lines. “I kept saying I wanted to see you/ Saying, ‘What’s wrong with that?’
Music is a large consumption of my daily life and the artists I listen to have shaped me in some way. Listening to music is one of my most time
It reminds us of how important it is to have a bond with people who love you and to cherish every moment with them. By listening to this song, it has made me want to spend more time with my family, especially my dad. He is a major influence in my life because he has made me who I am today. When him or my mother tell me how proud they are of me, I thank them for leading me in the direction they did. My dad has taught me to chase my dreams, but always know that he’s by my side. He also taught me to “take on this whole world”, but in the end I will always be his “little
Throughout my life, music has always been a major influence. It has the power to change my mood when I'm feeling down, but the thing I find most intriguing about music is that it doesn't always end up improving your mood: like all forms of art, it imitates life, which is not always portrayed in a positive light. The musicians that I admire most have the versatility to induce several different emotional responses in the same piece. This quality is present in most of the wide variety of music I listen to, from Russian composer Dmiti Shostakovich, to Chicago jazz band Tortoise, to California pop/rock sextet Mr. Bungle.
Music has been affecting society throughout history. Music has been around since the beginning of time. The influence of music on modern society can be easily seen today. It has been proven that music has many influences on humans in positive and negative ways. Music has been proven to alter a person’s mood, and has shown to cause physical responses in many people simultaneously. The mind is able to concentrate better, as the body becomes more relaxed and alert. Technology has greatly affected the musical effect on the brain and the way society views, absorbs, and creates music.
It is true that music has a compact link to our emotions. Music assists people to overcome the bad situations in their life, just like it did for Sonny, the barmaid, or some other people in the Harlem. Music has a tremendous effect on people’s mind because it makes them feel relax and comfortable, especially the soft classical music. It helps distressed people to stay smooth and peaceful. In fact, music is a remarkable way to ease our stress.
Music has always been an important part of my life. During high school I have developed areas of service and leadership through interests in children and gardening, which will continue to be major parts of my life.
Music dates back many centuries ago. Music was used for an array of things. In some cases, it was used for rituals, to pass messages, or even for celebrations. One song that has been of importance to me since coming to Maryland would be “Summertime Sadness” by Lana Del Ray. The entire album from which the song comes from is one of my personal all time favorites. I remember seeing her for the first time on Saturday Night Live where she was the musical guest. She was performing her popular single “Video Games” off of her album Born to Die. Her performance was not theatrical at all; in fact it was very minimalistic. The performance was supposed to be just about the song and not specifically about her showmanship. The critics gave her negative reviews about her lack of energy and how the performance was lacking emotion. It just made me more intrigued in her music. I downloaded her album right after that and didn’t really get around to listen to it until the beginning of the summer going into my freshmen year at Maryland. I would be lying if I did not say I had a huge crush on her, which also added to my liking of her music. One particular song on the album that was most important to me was “Summertime Sadness”. The song portrayed my feelings of leaving home for school and starting a new chapter in my life. The song’s genre also are subgenres of Rock which have inspirations to bands/producers Dr. Warfield has taught our class.
It did surprise me when I learned it was a song about love. Even then when you learn that it is a love song you can’t chalk it up as another cheesy breakup song like a majority of them because of the way the song sounds. I explained how this song is very heartbreaking but in a peaceful way and that’s exactly how the meaning of the song is represented. The deeper meaning of the song is sometimes it is better to let go of something than to hold on to it longer. In the song, it starts out happy to represent why you first became attached to something, “From walking home and talking loads, To seeing shows and evening clothes with you.”, “To staying up and waking up with you.”
Music is one of the most fantastical forms of entertainment. Its history stretches all the way from the primitive polyrhythmic drums in Africa to our modern day pop music we listen to on our phones. It has the ability to amaze us, to capture our attention and leave us in awe. It soothes the hearts of billions, and it is so deeply rooted in my life that it has touched my heart as well. Everyday I walk to the beat of the song stuck in my head and hum along to the melody. For me, to listen to music be lifted into the air by the hands of your imagination and float around for a while. You forget about your worries, your troubles and find peace within the sound. Every chapter in my life is attached with a song. Every time I listen to a certain song, thoughts of my past come flooding back
Through music we are able to comprehend someone’s personality, their views, their culture, and who they are as an overall person. The music you listen to is a reflection of who you are and your own personal thoughts. As I reflect on the music I listen to I came to the conclusion that I gravitate towards songs that depict the emotions we feel through lyrics while being able to relate it to my own personal experiences.
